I learned a few days ago that Eiko Nyu, 2p pro from Japan, is participating in the US Masters tournament this week - this must be the first time when a Japanese pro plays in this tournament.

So far she is doing very well - sole leader with 5 straight wins: https://www.usgo.org/tournaments/crosst ... matrix/187
She has yet to play Eric Lui and Mark Lee though.
Her game against Aaron Ye was commented live, here is the recording: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/453545561? ... &sort=time

This is a good opportunity to compare Japanese pro levels with US pro and strong amateur levels.

If I am not mistaken, Ito Kenryo was a Japanese professional who played in 2016. He went 6-3, with wins against Ryan Li, Zhaonian Chen, Albert Yen and 3 others, losses to Andy Liu, Bao Yun and Chinese 1p Zhang Hanchen.

Back in 2010, former insei Francis Meyer played in the Open (5-1, with a win against Eric Lui, and a loss to Myungwan Kim). At some later point, he returned to Japan and was able to become a professional.

What was the account used to broadcast on OGS? All of the sgfs on usgo.org are broken.

Few years ago Ton Yulin (4p at that time) won with pretty impressive score 8-1. However he lost to Mark Lee in great drama game (his opening was better, and in middle game he lead considerably, however Mark Lee was able to complicate game and Tong made critical mistake in boyyomi and lost - according to pro commentary, no idea what bot would think ^^). From other side, Mark Lee went 6-3, losing to Cao Yuin 3p, Zirui Song and Zexiang Sui.But he won also with Chen Wang who went 7-2. That was 2015 tournament.

Now Mark Lee is 4-1, imho a surprise. But i would still put all my KGS bucks for Mark.

Also Mark Lee played in the Ing student tournament in Cambridge last year (this year's just happened in Australia). He lost (iirc with a blunder misread) in the semifinal to Sha Xingyu (a Chinese student) but had finished top of the group stages with all wins (including over eventual 1st and 4th place: http://britgo.org/results/2018/awcca). Sha lost the final, and qualified as a pro in China a few months later: https://lifein19x19.com/viewtopic.php?f ... ro#p235229.

FWIW, I chat with Mark the other day, and he said he is not actively studying go these days. He has other things going on in his life. Not too long from now, he will likely be required to go back to Korea and serve his mandatory military service.

Mark Lee defeated Eiko Nyu today, I found online.
Here's the OGS record: https://online-go.com/review/404311

If Nyu Eiko win next game there will be 6-1 tie. Still better than meijin league, where its possible 5 players tie (however i must admit, its very unlikely).

In the end, Nyu Eiko won with a score of 6-1. Mark Lee lost his last game to Zhongfan Jian, leaving them at 5-2 and 6-1 respectively. However, Nyu won her head-to-head game with Zhongfan (I'm assuming that was the tie-breaker) and was 1st.

Eric was only 4-3. He had losses to the top three players, wins against Alan Huang (5-2) and Yongfei Ge (4-3).
