Thank you for the info! Does anyone have any thoughts on the Ke Jie game? It seemed pretty surprising to me but I didn't really understand it.

I saw a korean commentary on this game, black didn't play well at the top. And the highlight is the fight after the white's reduction. I found a chinese source (you can translate it in English with the right click)

Thanks both! I was thinking especially of moves 40-50. All the (elephant) jumping around just doesn't look like what I'm used to seeing. Did that seem "normal" to anyone? I was watching a stream, Biba or Kim Yoonyoung, who pointed out that there were something like five elephant jumps in that area.

Also, I was surprised that white let black connect with 88-89. Was that for sente, or was the corner just bigger than what white lost?

I wouldn't call the dance of the elephants normal, but it's not unheard of. Here's a game from Lee Sedol several years ago with a similar pattern: https://lifein19x19.com/viewtopic.php?f ... ol#p246909. It evokes the situation of when two polite people meet in a narrow path and keep moving left and right "no you go first" "no you" "I insist, you go", each player is inviting the other to connect with the kosumi through the elephant jump but neither wants to as then you end up feeling kikashid.

Top left looks like Ke didn't want to cut because then black gets good sente endgame so he went for the trade. Could have avoided that though by pushing at d17 before E18 block.

Thanks Uberdude, that's another really interesting and fun game, good material for me to work through slowly! There's something about those elephant jumps, so close together and so aggressively not connected that's hard for me to wrap my head around.

That linked Chinese page is cool too, lichigo. Fun flavor to it, and it's good Chinese reading practice for me.

Ke Jie vs. Xu Haohong
Tang Weixing vs. Park Yeonghun
Lian Xiao vs. Byun Sangil
Fan Tingyu vs. Shin Jinseo

Winner of game 1 will vs game 2 etc.

So if Ke Jie and Shin Jinseo meet, it will be the final. The final to watch.

Based on my simulations Shin Jin Seo has a 51% chance of winning the whole thing while Ke Jie has 30.5% chance.

Lian Xiao had the game in hand, but made a crucial late-game mistake to lose to Shin.

Tang Weixing always seems to raise his game in international tournaments and is able to beat Ke Jie, who has lost in the semifinal here for the past 3 times.

Final (Best of 3, time TBD):

Shin Jinseo vs. Tang Weixing
