Make a bit of influence, then drop a stone in the middle of the board, attacking nothing, pure gote, and say "I have a moyo" -- usually it's a kyu move, and I had to learn not to do it. You want your moyos to grow organically, as you lean on your opponent's groups, keeping the initiative.

So normally a centre move is played either when all the influence facing areas of the board are settled or in this rarer case。
