Cho U vs Iyama Yuta will start playing game 1 Thursday (Wednesday evening for US) in Okinawa.

$500k to the winner of the series. I'm looking forward to this matchup.

Iyama currently holds 5 of the big 7 Japanese titles (Honinbo, Tengen, Oza, Gosei, Judan). I wonder if he can make it all 7. I know Cho Chikun has won all 7, but has anyone ever held them simultaneously?

Uberdude, I don't think anyone has held all 7. It's rare that anyone has held the big 3 at the same time. Cho U is playing to keep the Kisei for a fourth straight term and Iyama for the chance to have six of the seven major titles.

Here was the match to decide the challenger to Cho U.

No one has ever done so.

In fact, Cho Chikun is the only one to have ever held the top three titles (Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo) simultaneously.

That would be the Grand Slam of Go!

Cho U also had the grand slam, but not all at one time.

Can anyone explain to me what b93 accomplishes in the challenger match? Its that slow type of honte move that pros play that I never quite grasp the meaning behind it.

How to read the result on Wbaduk? I watched the whole game and still doesn't know who won...

What? That move is not hane at the head of two stones - its kosumi at the head of two stones, which is not a proverb I've ever heard of

b93 is hane for sure if my eyes aren't wrong.

The important part of the definition is bending around your opponent's stones.

Sometimes it is best to look for the source of miscommunication, instead of just being right. B93 in the title match game looks to be hane at the end of two stones. The original question, however, is about the b93 in the challenger match game. It looks like lovelove's eyes are fine, and he is not looking at the wrong move, he is looking at the wrong game.

b93 in the challenger's game looks like a wonderfully thick move to me. It limits white's endgame on the left, more importantly it makes it harder for white to seal black in because of the weak group on the lower left. In fact, it further weakens it enough that white essentially treats it as sente and reaches out to the group with his next two moves.

Takao Shinji has a blog that I read regularly. He was in Kyushu for the game. At the lunch break he posted that Black was better (形勢は、黒が、良さそう) but 3 hours later he posted an update that White stood better, together with the puzzled inquiry, "When/how did White become better?" (白が良さそう。いつの間に、白が、良くなったんだろ？).

Game 2 starts in about three and a half hours. I think Cho U really needs to take this one.
