There's an oddity in forum structure. All regular boards are under "Life In 19x19.com General Topics" -section. The General Topics section itself contains contents of "Go Rules" section. I use board index to navigate between subforums. I'd suggest moving the subforums so that each is directly below "Board index" for easier navigation.

Here's a picture:

Board Index
......Life In 19x19.com General Topics remove and put same in plain text
......Introductions and Guidelines
......Off Topic
......General Go Chat
......Beginners
......Amateurs
......Professionals
......Go Rules
......Forum/Site Suggestions and Bugs
......Improve Your Game (empty forum), remove and put in plain text
......Game Analysis
......Study group
......Teachers/Club Leaders
......L19²GO (Malkovich) (empty forum), remove and put in plain text
......1-on-1 Malkovich games
......Big Brother Malkovich games
......Rengo games
......Other versions of turn-based games
......Go Gear merge into other subsections, put plain text instead
......Go Books
......Computer Go
......Gobans and other equipment
......Trading Post
......New Products/Upgrades/Sales <- like here (announcements)
......Go Club Forums many of these belong to their specific forums
......Go Club Discussions
......American Go Association Forum
......IGS
......Insei League Events
......Tygem
......Wbaduk
......Ride share to tournaments

This way every subforum is under board index and there's no middle man in between. Plain text indicates what is the general theme of subforums below it. I think this would make the forums easier to navigate.

Things like "L19²GO (Malkovich)" aren't actual forums where posts can be made, they're forum categories or groupings that enable features like "Mark all Malkovich games as read" (which marks all four forum posts as read, and wouldn't be available under your proposed "plain text" flattening scheme, as I understand it).

I see ross. I didn't realize there were topics in that middle category before I accidentally clicked it. Well I guess each way has its merits. The reason I created this thread was that the "General Topics" section content is identical to "Go Rules" subsection content, which I'd consider a bug.

I have no idea what could cause it. I'm no forum expert. :-?

Aha, I see what you mean now. Each "Section" (like "General Topics" or "Go Club Forums"), when you click it, shows a list of what it calls "active topics" from each board in that section. For example, viewforum.php?f=7 has topics from the WBaduk forum, the IGS forum, etc. all collected together. I'm not sure how the board software calculates "activity", but I'd guess from relative post count, etc.

So, if you click viewforum.php?f=1 General Topics, you would expect to see a collection of "Active Posts" from General Go Chat, Beginners, etc. in addition to Go Rules, since they're all under that subforum. However, the only "Active Posts" are in fact from the Go Rules subsection, which I agree looks like a bug.

Personally I'd just disable the "Active Posts" section altogether if possible, and when you click on a section, you just get a list of subsections in it—not any actual posts until you're viewing the subsection itself.

I agree with this. It could be useful to have those there, but I think they will just generate more confusion than not. I don't know of very many other forums that do this either, so doesn't help prepare people for how it shows up (but maybe I just don't know my forums...;)).
