Hi all, I've just gone and posted my second video following y'all's excellent feedback.

It's a sort of mini-lecture thing on capping attack, and I hope it's useful :)

All comments appreciated! (And I promise I'll stop posting these if I'm spam-plugging them in some people's eyes ;))

Wait, you said "ya'all"? Is my Texan rubbing off on you?

Maybe just make one thread where you announce your new videos, and announce them all in one.

Thanks a lot, this is a useful way for me to review the information you taught me the first time.

Good video. I noticed going through "Get Strong at Attacking" that I tended to prefer a knights attack when I could (should even) do a capping attack. The capping attack always made me wary because of the elephant's eye weakness, and being unable to predict the direction the opponent will escape. I also definitely defaulted to playing too close when the attackee diagonal approaches the capping stone (gut reaction was just to push instead of knight's jump). So definitely this was a solid video and I feel better about capping plays having watched it.

Also, if anyone else finds the interrupting ads annoying, there's a half grayed out "watch ad now or in X minutes" at the top. You can prewatch several ads at the beginning of the video and won't bother you for the rest of the video.

Can't wait for part 2 :)

Or install NoScript and AdBlock Plus (and tinker with the settings a bit so it loads the important parts of the Livestream page) -- I see the "An ad will start in 15 seconds" bit and then it counts down... and just goes away. Ahhh, bliss.

Speaking of Go commentary on Livestream, is Battousai on vacation? I haven't seen an update for like two weeks.

EDIT: haha, just loaded the page and there's something new from yesterday.

Yes, Adblock works well for that. I always thought it silly to do that sort of thing with live videos, cause when you're watching something that is actually live you miss stuff because of those ads.

This was awesome vid I must say. Very informative! My one suggestion is to do something about that crackling. It is much easier listening when the voice comes through without any other noises.

That was an excellent lecture. You're very clear and witty. I'm sure this'll come of good use in the future. Tomorrow I intend to look at the other video you have on there.

I also enjoyed the lecture. Since I saw it a week ago, I've been capping and covering with a knights move every chance I get! Fun stuff!

Hmmm, I might have some fun with reduction techniques then - that ties up the other main use of capping with shoulder hits, and leads nicely into decision making processes between reduction and invasion. Then maybe invasion techniques and sabaki, which could then lead into discussions of using sente... I'm seeing a chain here!

Thanks for the video, topazg. You gave some clear explanations. A lot of what you said pretty much makes sense to me, but I had one question about a comment that you made.

In particular, you mentioned the "Cap and knight's move jump" as a way to attack the group. It seems like a good heuristic. However, I'm not clear why the knight's jump is superior to pressing white in the following diagram:

I agree that it looks like the marked stone will be effective. However, what is wrong with a move like "a"? The move that feels most natural to me is "a", and I am curious about its disadvantages.

Quick first question to guide you in dealing with how to handle the opponents' weak groups:

Are you attacking it, or fighting with it?

If you're attacking, then you have no weak groups and you're just making profit. Be fast, outside, stay ahead, gain profit, leave some weakness for future exploitation.

If you're fighting, then you also have a weak group, the two of you are in a liberty battle, and you'll be lucky if you make it out alive. Take liberties, increase your own, push to get out, make bad shape, you don't care what happens as long as YOU DON'T DIE!

Let's compare two diagrams:

White almost connected, but he can still be cut. Maybe black decides not to right now, but even so the possibility is looming over White's head, oppressing his choices until something happens to change it.

Ok, white connected. Still cut later at A, B, C, yes?

Not exactly the same situation. Have you read Otake Hideo's book, Opening Moves Made Easy (or something like that?) - he (or the translator) came up with a good name for this sort of situation: a family feud.

By pushing through, black is forcing white to damage his own group and also the potential in the center. The three stones are no longer thick, they're heavy. So black has no cut.

tl;dr Make light, flexible shape in sente when you can - make slow moves when you must.

Well, I'm not sure the situation is so simple. It seems like black can seal in white as below and I don't think that white can actually escape anymore...
