This is what I played, to steal the eye, but now I don't want to take gote to keep that stone alive.

Maybe you just extend along the side like if white had played your :b1:

move like he was supposed to first and treat this exchange lightly cause it already kind of cramps him?

This is a good result and is the standard explanation for why White can't descend immediately at 8 in your original diagram. Your decision to slide into the corner was good. :tmbup:
