I'm sure most of you know this joseki and the followup hane at S15 when R14 is not played.

$$[/go]

How do you answer when B passively descents at S16 instead? Tenuki, play one of my local continuations at R15, Q15 or R14 or some other local continuation further away and treat the initial R15 attach stone as a light forcing move?

Also please do tell if the hanging conenction of N16 instead of O16 changes the answer to this question.

Thank you all in advance.

Actually,

the standard line (joseki) is :b9: followed by the atari at "a" and a fight. OC, Black cannot do that if White has made a solid connection instead of a hanging connection. :)

Often such passive plays are self punishing, and White can even tenuki, satisfied with a local advantage. In this case, however, White may be concerned about a fight.

:w10: is simple and strong.

[go]$$Bm9 More aggressive

:w10: here is more aggressive, aiming at "a" or "b" or "c", while leaving the weakness at "d".

Either is generally playable. :)
