My opponent played this large knight slide (at R18) from the small knight approach to the 4-4. I had to play black wit this board. I misplayed it in the game, but on review, my approach seemed to give a good result as long as I don't overplay like I did in the game. Was this the right direction?

If I recall correctly,
  • Q18 (as you played) is exactly what White wants.
  • Black's best play may be to tenuki, since White doesn't have a great followup.

Wow! That was stunningly on-point. Thanks! Turns out that neither I nor my opponent had a clue how to play it...

Out of curiosity, I looked at this position from the video with Lizzie:

Her preference is to play the standard joseki starting with B, where white takes a position on the left and black builds influence facing right. This also seems to have the effect of negating the pincer at D that was the motivation for A in the video. Compared to B, however, she only thinks that A is 0.3-0.4 percentage points worse. So, it certainly seems playable. In response to white A, her preference is to play C offering to trade the corner for a position on the bottom.
