This position occurred in a game of mine and I wasn't sure how to play; I'm somewhat familiar with the cap as a reduction against an entire side formation but haven't really seen it used when the corners are controlled by different players.

I played :b2: since my top right is very strong so I wanted to reduce the bottom right and it moves to cut white off and start a large attack. White ended up with a very bad result and :w3: seems to be too greedy in this case. :w3: at a seems to be the right direction to me.

I don't know if I like :w3: at 'a', either. Also, white's stones on the top look a bit weak, so I don't know if I want to start too much of a rampage on the right.

White's :w1: seems an overplay, and I agree with :b2: as being a good refutation. Consequently, there may be no such thing as a good play for :w3:.

I agree with this assement. If I felt I had to play on the right, the shoulder hit looks much safer:

BTW, I think that white has to play something like 'a' soon. Black has way too much central power.
