I thought this book was pretty good and gave me a firm footing on the basics. Although reading some reviews on it online it seems many people found it rather tough going and didn't consider it ideal for beginners. But then after having read My System by Nimzowitsch on chess I don't have much of a problem with difficult game books! :D

Right now I'm looking for something of "intermediate" level. The internet can have it's uses but like most people I much prefer having something concise and readily available to study with. I have seen some books on sale on Amazon, but I think I'd much rather trust the opinions of you guys before I buy a book!

I have good memories of Richard Bozulich's The Second Book of Go.

I learned a lot from graded go problems for beginners: http://senseis.xmp.net/?GradedGoProblemsForBeginners
It's a 5-book set, but you can just pick the first one (or the second if the first looks too easy) and it will have a lot of good problems.

+1 for The Second Book of Go. There's plenty to chew on in there (although some of it, like the bit about capturing races, will become more useful much later) but it it's great for taming that "OK, now we're playing - what are all the things that can be going on here?" feeling.

Its topics are also good hints about the broad avenues of further investigation into how Go works.

There are lots of choices. I will mention one that is lesser known but newer and excellent:

Baduk, made fun and easy.

Second book of Go was my first :-) book after knowing the basics and play some games and I really liked it. There're parts that could seem difficult at first but it gives a pretty good general idea of the game and you can always read it again after gaining some levels to make more profit from it.
