Post subject:  Where to buy Go Book?

I live in Asia, but I don't know where to purchase Go books.

I have been looking for The Second Book of Go. But the book on Amazon is priced from $60 to as high as $500(!).

Is the book still being published? I've checked on the publisher's website and still being listed
http://www.kiseidopublishing.com/Begin2.htm

So where can I buy go books aside from Amazon?

Are these highly recommended books also available as Kindle or ePub?

I am basing the recommendations from David Carlton's list http://www.gobooks.info/bib-difficulty.html

Cheers,
Sherwin

The second book of go is no longer in print, so that's why it's so expensive. It's a bit of a shame, because I thought it was a great book to read for beginners after they read the cho chikun introduction book.

There it says “Time left: 8d 22h”; better not bid too early in order not to drive the price unnecessarily higher.

Oops i misread the time. Thanks for pointing it out Bonobo.
Do be aware that shipping for books can be quite expensive.

This is another more up to date resource on books and how they rate.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1G2i ... HjBpY/edit

This guy explains what books he read, rates them, and when he studied them to reach 6 dan.

David Carlton's site is a bit dated from the mid 2000s.

Kiseido is having their summer sale...

Any recommendations on what books to buy?

Should I binge buy their books?

I'm only 21k on OGS.

It is expensive because it is Amazon marketplace. It is the same for available books, and it is not uncommon to see the same item sold 30 $ new by amazon, while the second hand one is simultaneously listed at a price of several hundred $ from marketplace sellers.

A good alternative to the Second Book of Go is Learn to Play Go vol 4 and 5.

Thanks ! I didn't know this link.
All I have to do now is buying Reducing Territorial Frameworks ;-)

I'd also have bought Get Strong at Tesuji, if I hadn't already got all the Level Up series, plus Speed baduk vol 4 to 12. I don't think I need more tesuji after these :-?

My gut feeling says no,
but it's really a personal value judgement call. :)

Are you more likely to devour a Go book,
or let it sit on the shelf and gather dust ? :)

At 21k, the Kiseido books I would recommend are
  • Graded Go Problems for Beginners, v. 1 (probably the one book that is suited for your current level)
  • Graded Go Problems for Beginners, v. 2 (once you have gotten through v. 1)
  • Tesuji from the Elementary Go Series (above your level right now but it will help you get from 15k to 10k)
Honestly right now you should mostly concentrate on playing a lot of games. It is probably just as likely as not that you will lose interest in go (which is okay!) before you get to the point that most of these books will help you.

If you are on a budget and you want a cheap little go library, go to slateandshell.com and order some of their books before August 1st. Be aware that shipping may be much more than the price of the books you order during this FINAL sale. They are switching to selling print books via Amazon after Aug 1st.

I'd recommend the following:

Mastering the Basics of Go $1
Liping Huang's Problem Book $1
Masterpieces of Handicap Go, vol. 1 $1
Masterpieces of Handicap Go, vol. 2 $1
Mastering Ladders $1
Best Play $1.50
Playing the Endgame: A Brief Introduction $1.50
Go Problems for Kyu Players, vol. 1 $1.50
Go Problems for Kyu Players, vol. 3 $1.50
Go Problems for Kyu Players, vol. 4 $1.50
Modern Masters: Redmond on Pro Games $2.50
Go Consultants $4
(Go Problems for Kyu Players, vol. 2 is a bit more costly at $4.50)

And if you have a larger budget, the following would be very good for a go library.

Fundamental Principles of Go $17.50
Workshop Lectures Combo, vols.1-6 $25

OK. So I took some advice and didn't take some advice.

I bought some from Kiseido because it was free shipping. And I bought some from S&S, since the discounts practically covers the cost of shipping.

My wife said I better read the books cover to cover.

So I started the Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go.
