At your level, why do you read Attack and Defense and joseki dictionaries? To prevent yourself from lesrning first principles first? Those are important books but, at your level, not your first priority. Do not read books because they are suggested but first resd books suggested for your level.

Joseki dictionaries are also good for improving but not at his level!

First principles are in First Fundamentals, Lessons in the Fundamentals, some other beginner books and verbal knowledge not available in books yet.

It is not that Attack and Defense would be useless at his level, but read Fighting Fundamentals first because Attack and Defense makes more assumptions of preliminary knowledge. However, these and similar books should be read after all those for first principles. From both books, one profits much more when a few ranks stronger than his current level. If one reads the books (too) early, they should be read again then.

The purposes of pincers are explained in detail in Joseki 1 - Fundamentals and in less detail in Fundamental Principles of Go.
