For those that have bought the reprint of this book from Ishi Press, what is the printing quality like? I was thinking of getting it because the book is quite highly regarded due to its methodical progression and drilling of similar-yet-different shapes. But I've also heard pretty dodgy things about the reprint, like it was done on someone's scanner.

How rare are the originals? Like, completely impossible to get hold of, or just pretty tricky to get hold of?

I bought this edition about two years ago, and I have been very happy with it. The content is fantastic! As you say, it provides a very exhaustive exploration of standard shapes. My only criticism is that the book is organized by the original shapes (L, L+1, etc.) and not also by the techniques used for life and death.

I tend to use this book most as a reference, looking up shapes after a game. However, I have been trying to slowly go through the material a more systematic way with the goal of eventually learning all of it. But there is a lot of information. So, it is very slow going.

As for the quality, I have found it to be sufficient. The text is consistently and clearly printed, but the figures are not. That said, even the most lightly printed figures have been legible. So, while I wouldn't consider it well printed, it is sufficient to convey the information.
