Hi everyone. I have just bought a new Goban secondhand. Can anyone help me identify the wood?

Guessing, based on the grain and color, is that it's spruce. Really nice looking, in particular the grain on the face.

Others are more knowledgeable on this, and there is very limited information, but my guess would be it is kaya, not shin-kaya or spruce.

I find it a very nice, but also an intriguing board.
How/what explains the difference in (tone of) color top and side?

Both top surface and beautiful legs are indications to me it may be kaya and not spruce.
Where/how/from whom did you acquire this board?

My wife found a man that deals in Japanese antiques,'not specifically go equipment' to get a board or off Japan. He insisted it is the real deal and suggested it could be as old as 1950's but couldn't say for sure. It cost me $600 australian dollars. To get it to my door. Board, stones and bowls.
