Found this pair of “salad bowls” on Etsy (the link may expire soon). Cheap, only $60 including 3-day DHL shipping to Boise, Idaho, all the way from Thailand. They appear to be chestnut wood, unstained and without a varnish coat. I’ll post another photo when they arrive.

Can anyone tell me what the brushed-on characters are saying?

Common chestnut bowls from KGT (Yes, I have a pair of these, who doesn’t?):

Hi David,

土橋, dobashi, do + hashi, "soil + bridge"

The penmanship quality is low, imo.

EdLee, thank you so much, very kind of you.

I wonder what that really means, “soil bridge” or, less literally, “land bridge” or simply, “bridge”? And why would someone use a brush to awkwardly scrawl these characters in the lids of salad bowls?

If I put the characters into a Japanese search engine, I mostly get hits for a baseball player. Curious. The two characters appear as a pair in hundreds of phrases.

Hi David,

You're very welcome.

The j.wiki page explains the architectural aspects of the bridge;
it's also a family name ( baseball pro, etc. ).

Re:
  • Kobashi, ko + hashi, small bridge, 小橋 ;
  • Nakabashi, naka + hashi, central/middle bridge, 中橋 ;
  • Ōhashi, large bridge, 大橋 ;
  • Ōhashi, king's bridge, 王橋 ;
  • Hashimoto, 橋本 (e.g. Hashimoto Utarō, 9p) ;

...salad bowls?
They are Go bowls.

And why would someone use a brush...
Could be the name of one owner ( not the craftsperson ).

With a Sharpie. :)
