I took the time to attach your pictures here so that the people here with more qualified expereience than me can help you with the wood of both goban and goke and the meaning of the marking on the bottom.

I like your gosu. They remind me a lot of the grain in koto after it's charred and polished (which sounds barbaric, but works).

Take care

Thank you very much, I’m not sure why I was having so much trouble posting the pics

I recalling like the color and the flow of the grain on them as well, they have a good weight and the lids fit perfectly

My girlfriend and I have already enjoyed a good handful of games on the board, it is quickly becoming a favorite night in ritual

Very happy for you, a wonderful find that you will prize for many years. The bowls appear to be chestnut. Those marks on the bottom surface? Obviously the blood of transgressors. Please post additional observations as they happen.

I doubt the bowls are chestnut. These bowls have parallel, straight grain (masame) but chestnut bowls usually have itame grain.

Thanks very much! Lol and yes the blood of transgressors mwahahahaha. So far the bowls look closest to the pictures of Mulberry bowls I have found online. I definitely already prize the set, it has been great to relax and play games on so far.
