hi - i am quite new here, hope i am making no mistakes in creating new topic...

i am playing on kgs quite a lot, suddenly stone clicking sound was missing.

i re-installed JRE, java web start, cgoban client - but same problem.

i hear warning sound at byoyomi and sound when game setting are changed but no stone clicking anymore...

that's very pity.

i am running windows 7.

sound settings inside kgs and java installation correct.

may be someone has an idea what i could try to solve the problem? thanks.

are you listening to music or videos or any other audio applications at the same time?

often on Windows, some applications will "steal" the audio drivers for exclusive use, such that other applications can no longer produce any sounds.

This is a limitation of Windows, so recommend that you only do one thing at a time

yes - true - i am listening very often to music on the computer...

... but when i start playing on kgs i've turned off the music before of course...

thanks for the answer!

strange is that i am hearing the other kgs sounds - only stone clicking missing...

i've found in the internet that this problem arises if you don't use "sun's java", but i guess i am using the correct java...

... and linux users seem to have the same problem sometimes, but i am not running linux...

and there are different types of sound (I forget the technicalities) -- like audio sounds (music) and effects (alerts).

if I recall, in Windows you can turn off one without affecting the other.

so did you turn off your Windows effects alert sounds (like the loud ding when clicking the wrong thing, etc)? Because those will be the same as your stone clicking sounds.

Yes, the stone clicks were the first sounds added to KGS, back when Java was young and the only audio system was very primitive.

Later as I added more audio I would always use the "latest and best" java audio system, and because Java audio was always screwed up they kept writing whole new systems, so now there are three different audio systems that KGS uses. I would have expected the old systems in java to pass through to the newer, but no that is not the case, instead they use totally different underlying system APIs in some cases, so you get weird things where you hear the clicks but not the KGS Plus audio, or the warning beeps but not the clicks, or whatever. Sigh.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, the sound work with "passing" or "confirm a challenge", but there no sound when putting a stone on the board.

I have KGS+ and I use Windows XP.

The same problem happen in both web and non-web cgoban.

I think I use the latest version of Java 7, since this is what I got when I open Cgoban... Thought, if I go in control panel and go in java setting the make "java console show up", then when I open cgoban3, it say I use :

Code:
Java Web Start 10.0.0.147
Utilisation de la version JRE 1.7.0-b147 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM

I don't think I have any other program that use sound...

Anyway, it's a very annoying bug, hoepfully this can be fixed.

Couldn't fix the problem - so i am playing with the extra-handicap of "no-stoneclicking-sound" - a bit annoying in fast lightning games and byoyomi...

I am working with mozilla firefox here with this one almost all the time ...

On another computer with the same programs just running with internet explorer only - everything is working perfectly regarding stone clicking sound ...

Probably just a matter of chance, i guess...

It would be interesting to know which users who experience this problem are using Java 1.6 and which are using Java 1.7. To check your version of Java, open a command console (terminal) and type this command: java -version

If you do not have a shortcut to open a command console, you can enter cmd from a run dialog.

my result are the following three lines after "C:\Users\(name)>java -version":

java version "1.7.0_01"
JAVA (TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_01-b08)
JAVA Hotspot(TM) Client VM (build 21.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing)

(Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 32-Bit)

I noticed this "missing sound" issue recently on my Mac (10.6; 64 bit; java 6)

I usually have the sound turned off on my work laptop, and usually only log onto KGS from my personal Mac (no issues on my personal Mac -- and I don't recall those values at the moment)

weird -- didn't expect to have this problem on my Mac

Since I lost the stone click sound by running the client under Java 1.7, I went back to Java 1.6.

I just installed the newest version of OpenSuSE (12.1), and I cannot get the stone click working under any version of Java.

I found an easy way to make it work without unstalling anythin.. it should work on windows, linux and probably mac, but I'll explain for the windows user.

Look in your program file and try to find the a folder called something like jre version 6(it should still be there if cgoban used to work well on your computer) and try to run it in command line(start > execute ... and type "cmd"). I did it like this:

Code:
C:\>"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -version
java version "1.6.0_24"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_24-b07)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 19.1-b02, mixed mode)

If you got this output with the 1.6 version, you found the right file.
Now download the offline ".jar" of cgoban here:
==> http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jar
Download it and you put it in a place like C:\cgoban\

Then just run :
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -jar C:\cgoban\cgoban.jar

Cgoban should open right away. Connect to your accound and make a demo game, click on the board and you should have sound.

After that, you can make a batch file of the previous command line to make it easier.

edith: I just tested this on ArchLinux and it didn't work with 'java version 1.6.0_20'...

I have the same problem (Windows Vista and JDK 7u3 and 6u31). In the past I had no problems, but now the only solution seems to be to switch to another server like Tygem.

I personally haven't had any real issues with KGS sound (though I have XP, Java 6_30, and 90% of the time I have it on mute anyway) but from trying to help a lot of windows 7 users troubleshoot, there is an issue with Java7 and KGS sound, rolling back to Java 6 should fix the issue (at least most of the time...perhaps it was java 6 update 31 where it broke). Linux I'm not as sure about since I don't have a computer running linux right now, but there's another thread where some workarounds have been posted for linux.

Same problem here.

JRE 1.6.0_32-b05
Windows 7 x86

I tried to uninstall JRE, and remove related folders and registry entries as much as posible, and then reboot OS and re-install with offline installer, but still no sound when putting a stone on to the board.

I tested Normal jnlp installation, KGS web site with firefox, and cgoban.jar on my HD, but all same results.

If someone got over this problem, please tell us how!!
