All the miscellaneous organizational stuff should go here.

Got questions?
Want to discuss rules? ( Malkovich rules, not go rules )
Conventions? ( such as what color fonts to use )

This thread is for all of that.

As an example of a convention, I quote:

topazg wrote:

RED -> Feelings, observations, considerations, strategic instincts

BLACK -> Individual move analysis, variations, tewari analyses and other tactical choices

GREEN -> Comments aimed at 8k and weaker - obvious looking variations I didn't play, why I take sente or tenuki at odd looking times, sacrifices that seem unlikely. Also, comments on "good form", "things to not do" etc that I often see DDK players do that they shouldn't.

BLUE -> Score estimations

I might not follow this myself, but I think that something like this is good for organizing posts.

I've tried archiving some of the malkovich games, but the archives end up too big, because of duplicate images and extraneous files. I wonder if someone could put out a script that would do the archiving, removing these duplicates?

If not, any ideas on how we can get the archive size under 256 KB?

I would like to see a post with tips about how to effectively manage the technical details of playing a Malkovich game, e.g., the "show diagram source" trick, what free SGF software is good for exporting compatible diagrams, etc.

Phelan - I've archived all the games without including the players' avatars (for some reason DownThemAll! is doing that as I download webpages, but as it turns out, that's convenient). It works for keeping most archives under that limit, which I actually didn't know existed. The big brother one is still to big as a .zip, though I haven't actually tried to upload it yet. However, bzip2, rar, and 7z compression get it down well (especially 7z - it goes from 378.3kB zip to a whopping 97.2kB 7z!). My only problem is that these take a bit more technical skill (or in 7z's case, a download) to open. Still, given the amount of programmers on here, they should be able to handle it, so I may upload it in one of these formats anyway.

As for go editing software, there's tons of them, but I use the KGS client available for download at http://www.gokgs.com/download.jsp (note: this is the downloadable client - it does more than the web client).

I use CGoban 3 too, but it doesn't export diagrams in SL format, does it?

Ah, yeah, that should cut down on the size. If it is still too big, you could split it into two archives.
I have 7zip installed, so I'd have no problems with that, but I think most people would.

dfan, nope. I think drago does. But if you don't want to install anything else, you can do it at senseis: http://senseis.xmp.net/?GenerateDiagramFromSGF
I think in most Malkovich games people just copy the diagram from some other post and edit it by hand.

Post subject:  Re: MISC - rules, comments, questions, bug reports, etc

What I'd like to do is write a script that uses the quote feature to get the actual comments as written by the players/observers so the diagram images don't have to be included at all. It would take a lot of work, but in theory it could be pointed at any thread and just archive the whole thing, lickedy-split. It could even transfer them over here post-by-post, as-is. The posts would all be under the same user, but they could be prefixed with the original poster's name in big bold letters.

Maybe I'll take a sick day from work...

Post subject:  #15 Alakazan vs MagicWand lost? / to be resumed?

I couldn't read the thread Malkovic #15 Alakazan vs MagicWand on GD. Is this game lost?
And is it supposed to be resumed shortly?

It shouldn't be lost, since there was a GD database backup. It isn't available right now, though.

As I'm about to start the teamovitch, a question for you all:

Is editing each diagram by hand still the most common way of posting lots of diagrams?

Yes, at least, it is as far as I know :)

I apologize if I missed this simple answer. Are these games played on this forum or is there an "OGS" type platform? Thank you!
Also, love the concept however I find it hard to find a game I can relate to with so many SDK/Dan games out there. Would it be feasible to split Malkovich forum in to >SDK and <SDK games?

The games are played on this forum. And while I can't answer about the splitting(not being an admin after all), I would like to bring up this sticky on the malkovitch page
http://lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=146
The initial conceptualization of the Malkovitch format was based on a desire to see the thought process of stronger players. So perhaps its a good thing there are so many SDK/Dan games out there :)

That said I like your subdivision idea, but answer me this. How would you place a game between a 1 dan and a 12 kyu for example?
Also >SDK and <SDK leaves out all the SDK

Relating to Malkovich games on OGS, Uberdude and I have mentioned the possibility briefly in http://www.online-go.com/forums/thread. ... eadID=2679

I think that if there's enough interest it can be made as a feature request. I'd imagine a lot of the code that's needed for it to work already exists from the kibitz support for title matches.

All good points. I did see the sticky in the past and did ponder how this question would fit in. Bottom line, put the game in the most advanced ranking bracket.

I guess as so far as the OGS platform being used as a mirror, I was simply struggling to wrap my brain around running a game on a BB site alone, however I'm much better now.

Thank you all for your answers and feed back.

I'm not sure what the best place to put this is. Ideally I would have made a new thread, but that doesn't seem appropriate in this forum, and the topic doesn't seem appropriate for another forum. So here it is.

I had this idea of a Malkovich-based teaching game. The idea would be to get one stronger player and one weaker player, preferably with at least a 6 stone difference. Aside from that, it proceeds like a normal Malkovich game. I would imagine there's no problem with the stronger player looking at the weaker player's comments, but the weaker player should not look at the stronger player's comments.

I think that it would be a great learning experience, obviously for the weaker player in the game, but additionally for other players around the same strength who probably all make a lot of the same types of mistakes.

Of course, it's probably not super exciting for the stronger player, so maybe there's not much interest in doing something like this.

But if there is, I would of course not mind volunteering myself :P

You could just put up a request for such a game in the malkovich thread, and include your current rank, I think.
