I thought this might work out well for black, or a looser pincer to take the top.

He pulled back, and did so high. So far my guesses for my opponent's moves this game are not that great.

Either way, sticking to the plan. This move threatens to attack black's wall. If he defends it in gote then I can undercut the right. I may save that, however, to approach the lower left from the bottom. I have potential down there now that I have a 4th line stone.

I'm not going to lie, I have no idea what to do right now. I reach this point in games where the opponent will play a move and I'll draw blanks. I'm pretty sure responding here is necessary. And I thought out some moves. I could:

A. Tenuki
B. Play the move I just did.
C. Play H16

I ultimately decided that tenkuki'ing probably wasn't the best idea here even though I could go for the right side. Plus I'm not entirely sure what approach I'd use. But I imagine :white: will eventually decide to target the right side, and that's what I'm waiting for. I'm hoping to turn it into a fight, and hopefully slay some of :white:'s stones.

B and C sort of go together here. My idea is this:

This moves seems somewhat urgent. Black's wall has no base and no eyes, but it is undercutting the side group. So, I'll play a dual-purpose move that strengthens my base on the top while denying one for black. His wall is not alive. I will treat it now as a weak group. The goal is not to kill it, but to attack it for profit on the left.

I hadn't considered this attachment. I read for what would happen if black attached on the inside, but I hadn't considered that he would attach on top. Apparently he agrees with me that his group is weak and my top stones are stronger since he feels comfortable attaching. The rule for attachments is: "If you are weak, hane. If you are strong, honobi." I feel my stones are relatively strong, so I won't expose weakness with a hane. If he extends along my stones I will hane then.

My impression is that one of A or B would be a better move for black 9. Otherwise, white's group is under no pressure and can be made solid enough as to be hard to attack with a single move. Once white's group becomes solid, the avalanche result in the top left becomes bad for black, as the wall needs to be used to attack something, not face a strong white position. B takes territory or splits white, leaving white to contend with the wall on the left. A helps protect against the cut/clamp in sente.

When black attaches to strengthen the wall, it makes white similarly strong. Black's wall has become a liability and attaching induces white to strengthen his group, making the aji at M17 less worrisome. Black set up an area with relatively strong positions on both sides, making a fight in the area favourable for black, but then chose not to fight, so white gets an easy position and black's previous moves look out of place or inefficient.

It's okay. Don't worry about it. :)

This seems like the only move. It is a hane at the head of two stones and it defends against black cutting off and killing my two stones with a hane. Since I took the time to take away black's base I can't very well let him suddenly have one. I want his group to be relatively weak. Additionally, this makes my top side much stronger. I feel like that group is basically alive at this point.

All in all, I'm feeling pretty good.

I've also earned some more points with that move. It is conceivable that black could remove points with a monkey jump, so I'll be conservative in my estimate. I feel the top side there is worth about 6 points right now. However, the descend did take away some corner points since black can kill them with a monkey jump. I think the corner is now only about 8 points. I may get all the points, but I want to be more conservative with these estimates. Overall, that means the score has returned to where I said it was - 20.5 for white (when you include komi).

Since I have no illusions about killing black's group in the center I would like to assess its point value. However, I seem to be able to take away all the points with 1 move by playing another hane around black's two stones on the other side. If black fixes he will then have points there. I think I could say he has 4 from that group if he chooses to fix. Until then, still 0 for black.

So still 20.5 to 0. Here are my point counts:

Since none of the other corners are urgent, my feeling is just to play :b13:, making a thick wall that needs no extension because it has good eye potential.

For :w16: my feeling is to play this block. After :b17: :b15: is awkwardly placed, while if Black were to play at 16 it would have a nice relationship with the two Black stones.

For :w18: I like the peep, followed by the extension to :w20: . It is true that the peep foregoes the hane at "a", but that would not fit with making a White base on the top side, anyway.

For :b19: I think that Black should play the hanging connection. Yes, it is unfortunate to make it after White has made a base on the top side, instead of before, when Black would have been ready for the attack. Black may have fallen a bit behind, but nothing that can't be made up. :) It is important that the wall be a strength rather than a liability.

I have been waiting to have sente to play this move. The bottom of the board is my most developable, it is the largest side, and this is the last corner to be approached. I can't think of anything on the board bigger than this.

I expect a pincer. I can't imagine my opponent giving me a pull-back to the star point again when I have so much potential here. If he does I will be thrilled.

I will stand up, then counter pincer to build the bottom. I expect black will then either jump out and I can tenuki to deal with the right or he will tenuki and play on the right himself.

If black pincers high, or farther away, then I may consider changing direction to pincer his corner stone or diving into the corner. I am less happy with this, however, because my left side is all low at the moment. However, I can raise the position by attacking black's group which is not yet alive. As they say - 1 eye does not a living group make.

EDIT: Also, hailthorn. I must credit you for a great find on your move. This is a quite active way to defend the cut at F16 and I never would have seen such a move myself. I had read that this seemed to be your strongest reply after I cut and extended, but this sets you a move ahead in that sequence by playing it now so the cut doesn't work directly. It also doesn't seem to leave any extra aji - at least not that I can see for now. Very well seen. I'll need to remember to look for moves like this in the future.

There is certainly a case to be made for a play like :w26: on the right side, whether you call it an approach or a wedge. It is a big point, and previous play has not really lowered the temperature on the right side. White certainly has room to maneuver ("a", "b", "c"). It also makes :bc: look silly. It looks kind of silly, anyway, but if Black builds a big framework on the right side it won't look silly anymore. ;) There is a psychological point, as well. :bc: signals that Black likes to build frameworks. Why not disappoint him? Finally, even with komi White's job in the opening is to keep Black from having an easy time.

This is an example of hopeful reading. If White can see this now, do you think that Black will not see it one move later? And not play :b2:?

Well done! :) A different pincer is not just a maybe. It should be part of your plan, instead of hoping for the above diagram. The time to consider such possibilities is now.

White gets the bottom. I get the right side. But I also figure I'll be able to diminish the value of the bottom. If not, then that's where the fun begins.

But yeah, I didn't realize that black so highly valued the right as to tenuki an approach. I still have my invasion/reduction point so I will play it now. As they say - invade the moyo one move before it turns into points. This is not points. All the stones are 4th line. Additionally, I have the 3-3 invasion at my disposal. Black is about to earn points. Let's see how many. If black blocks me toward the top, as I would expect, I can link back to my corner. If black tries to block me from connecting to my corner I can either live or cut the lower of the two long-knight moves, creating a fight that seems in my favor.

If I come away with sente, I will play the double approach and that will be a windfall for me, giving me both the left and the bottom of the board. Black can't let me have sente from here - but I will do my best to get it.

So I'm willing to take a risk here. I've thought this out and played this out many times on a real Go board (Is that legal? I hope so) and so far as I can tell this will work out for me. But I can predict 100 moves but that doesn't mean :white: will play any of them. But screw it. YOLO, right? And that is quite an apt description here. I'm risking serious deduction, death, and even the fate of the world (just kidding) with this move.

I want the right side. My stones aren't optimized for this, but hopefully I can finagle a good result here.

I had not anticipated this particular move, but I did consider that he would make an iron pillar by descending and this move is very similar. I am glad that my opponent continues to surprise me. I hope I am also surprising him.

I read out several moves for various replies, but I have decided against trying to connect directly.

And so I decided to play this move.

---

My goal is to live locally or force my way out. I am fine if black gets thick on the outside here. I have plenty of ways and time to reduce a center and black clearly wanted to make points here. Living takes away many of them.

I have two ideal goals:

1. Live in sente to double approach the bottom.
2. Leave the 3-3 a possibility.

If I achieve either of these goals I think I will be in a great spot. If I get both I don't see how I can lose.

Black has many many replies and I have read for a lot of them. I think playing :b27: high was a mistake. Since every stone is high over here living doesn't seem that difficult.

If I can use a ko to get an eye at 'a' and preserve the chance of getting one at 'b' while threatening to make one directly at 'c' by capturing :b5:. If I play this way I doubt black will go for the ko. I have local threats to get out toward the center and make eyes so I don't see how I can lose.
