There's a lot of pressure building here on the bishop and something is about to happen. Initially, I thought this was knight move was a good move because it threatened to trade my knight for his bishop (the bishop being pinned still and unable to escape). While this is true, I played out a bunch of variations and realized that, while this is a potential result and he can ensure an even trade with the right moves, the wrong moves will lead to a worse result, because of the threatened fork of the Queen and King if I move my knight to F3. I've made a 'study' on lichess showing these variations. I haven't done this before, but hopefully folks without a lichess account can view it and see the variations.

My prediction.

Kirby will move his queen to c2, to protect both the bishop and pawn on c3. Then there will be exchanges of bishop, knight, and two rooks on d3, followed by Rd8, and, after Kirby moves his queen, e5.

In some ways, I wanna finish this game up so that I can get back to focusing on go.

Well, he avoided the fork! And the apparent pin of the knight is nice. But unless I'm missing some way that this puts my Queen in serious trouble, I think I'm up another pawn.

Maybe I will regret this, but this capture threatens his queen, so whatever he's cooking up with the kingside pawn push is going to have to wait until he gets his Queen out of trouble.

W has collapsed. Knight capture F2 pawn might be a fun way to finish.

I'm not sure what's going on here. The Queen can't stay there, thanks to this knight move. The Queen can't do any damage by attacking my castled king (without getting captured). Her position would be helpful if he could pull off a back-rank check with a rook (since the queen would be blocking my only escape square), but he can't pull that either. I'm not really sure waht to do in the bottom with my queen/knight, so at the very least, I can start advancing my other knight and threaten his queen in the process. This is a bit risky, as my knight is not guarded any more.

@Mitsun:

I'm not entirely sure what the rules/etiquette of Malkovich threads are, but as the black player I would at least appreciate it if you spoiler tagged any move suggestions for black (I want to avoid seeing suggestions that could influence my thinking). Thanks!

Either this is some brilliant Queen sac, or he just overlooked that I could capture, or this is one final charge because he feels he has lost the game and is just doing what he can to put pressure on me.

Oops, sorry, I meant to /hide/. Thanks Ed for fixing it.

I resign the game. Thanks for playing against me. I was able to see how challenging chess can be :-)

It was nice to be able to read through the comments. I totally missed the early check threat W had with the bishop when I took the first pawn. Only one comment puzzled me:

Bill, would you mind explaining what I was wrong about? I might be able to figure out why I was wrong if I knew that much, but my only guess is I was wrong about being up another pawn? I don't see a way to get the pawn back for W, so I am clearly missing something if that's the case.

I think Bill meant that he was wrong in predicting the next move :)

Yes, I meant that I was wrong again. {sigh}
