Hi everybody,

I have some observations about my game. Are these correct?

:w6: I now see this is probably the worst move to make here. Better N3/N4 or possibly F3 or O17 or D10 even.
:b9: is probably also a mistake. He should be surrounding me.
:w16: should this be at j3 or j4 to make better use of the right side stones?
:w18: Better at D6 to strengthen that group. Now it would be nice if H3 would be farther away.
:w20: Was actually a misclick. I wanted to play C5. In retrospect C6 would be better.
:w26: Silly move. Better to push at C8 some more.
:b41: Argh.
:w42: M3 better, but still a pretty gruesome fight will ensue. Is the game decided more or less in favour of black at this point?
And finally, was there some way to invade the big black group to the right at some point. There were some cutting points.

Greetings from Holland,
Jorden

Some comments:

In addition to the problem in the fighting on the bottom, the real issue is that white concentrated on slightly expanding a living group (the center one) instead of trying to be the first to the other parts of the board. White could have staked a big claim on the top, limiting the right side by approaching the upper right star point, or climbed up on the left, but instead committed to securing a few points in the center and conceding all of these areas. In the meanwhile black had multiple inroads to reduce it, since it wasn't completely walled off.

Hi jorden,

:w6: Not the worst move, but yes, other moves elsewhere are bigger. :)

:b9: Yes, common mistake. P4, etc.

:w10: Get a feeling this is wrong for more than 1 reason.
Just S6 hane in sente, then tiger's mouth R7 is OK for W.

:w14: Tiger's mouth o4 -- fix your shape directly.
Remember: when strength becomes weakness or vice versa --
( when weakness turns into strength ) -- it can be big.
Starting with :w6: at R5, if you can get a nice tiger's mouth o4 here,
you turn your weakness into strength -- you're happy.
With the P2 descend, your shape is not complete -- there's lingering weakness.
:w16: & :w18: -- Yes, :w18: at D6. And yes, you can tell if your :w16: is too close if you read ahead to :w18: -- yes, J3 better for :w16: . :)

:w20: Mis-click. Yes, C6 attach, W hane C7, you connect C5, W fixes his cut, you live in the corner in gote.
The price to pay for :w18: .

:w26: Bad for more than 1 reason. D3 or mentioned D2 better (for yose).

:w34: Bad. Locally, at least B5; or, mentioned E4 vital point.

:b35: - :w36: This exchange is good for W; B still has to fix E4 in gote.

:w38: Start to realize there are good sente moves and bad sente moves.
Just because a move is sente or forcing doesn't automatically make it good.
To distinguish between the two is an endless learning curve.

:w42: Another difficult, endless learning curve: good contact versus bad contact. :)
In some cases, it's bad to make contact ;
in some other cases, it's good.
Very difficult; must assess case by case.
Here, this :w42: contact doesn't look good for W.
:w48: You must first read the connect at P4.
If P4 connect leads to a complete disaster for W, then you look for other options.

:w94: Improve past this kind of moves. :)

:white: 108 Wrong for more than 1 reason.
Good to look up and study a basic 3-3 joseki here.

:white: 108 - 118 Much better if you hane directly at S16 on :white: 108.
This entire sequence ( :white: 108 - 118 ) is bad for W and good for B.
Can you see that, later,
after o19 throw-in, M19 throw-in, J19 hane, W has exactly Zero points there.
:white: 134 Bad shape. Related to why you made :w34: ( also bad shape ).
Locally, jump to H13 ( Re: jump to B5 for :w34: ).

:white: 190 Bad habit. Just connect directly at :white: 192.

:white: 192 Bad shape. Tiger's mouth S18.

( :study: Study the bad empty triangle: :w34: , :w94: , :white: 108 , :white: 134 , :white: 192 . )

:white: 212 Mistake. Giving away points to Black.

:black: 233 Red flag. ( See next move. )

:white: 234 What's your plan if :black: B5 ? ( Re: :w34: bad shape. )

:black: 237

Overall: beware of the bad empty triangle
( there are exceptions when it's good ; but notice the bad ones you made in this game. :) )

@skydyr Thanks for taking the time to look at my game. I think I just completely stopped evaluating the global position after feeling unhappy about the way the fight in the lower side went. I find it hard to accept making a mistake and instead of compounding it with further mistakes just to accept the new position and make the best of it. I also tend to forget that same-ranked opponents will probably make just as many mistakes...

@EdLee Thank you for the comments. I'll put a post-it on my monitor about empty triangles. I think I didn't even register them if they didn't 'face' enemy stones... I've just gone through a few ddk games on KGS solely to see empty triangles.
