I'm black and felt like I was bit of a mess this game. My (semi) focus this game was to make good use of any wall that I may build (consequence of a lecture that I recently saw).

I lost but the purpose was to try out some techniques, but things got a bit too complicated for my liking, struggling for life on multiple fronts.

Thank you for the review.

Hi negapesuo,

:w14: Probably not a good move. :)

:b17: Since W ignored your :b15:, did you consider C10 ?

:b29: N8 hane is a natural feeling.

:b33: Were you happy when you played this move ?
Remember that :w18: jumped into your area,
and now you played a gote while W happily takes the outside.

:b35: Now that W is happily out, W is not your target any more.
In fact, it is B who has to worry: J3 is a weak point for you.

:b41: Misread ? This kind of move makes little sense.
To connect out, J7 block or H6 turn.

:w42: W is happy to hane J3.

:b61: Did you consider J8 turn ?

:b65: Did you consider to save your dying group with F9 ?

:b69: , :b71: , :b73: This won't do.

155: I think the bamboo joint is good here. When your opponent plays a move like 154, play solid, and it will die without you even trying to kill it. (Of course, read carefully to verify it, but the solid play might be a first thought when your opponent's stone is so weak and you are so strong).

Thanks! I feel like what you told me should be a proverb, if it's not already.

I don't know if there's any proverb that matches it exactly, but it's related to http://senseis.xmp.net/?MakeAFistBeforeStriking and the general observation that when you extend yourself to kill, you can create weaknesses.

Other appropriate proverbs or ideas:
- Don't help your opponent
- Don't atari the cutting stone (except when you should, it's actually quite common for atari to be a good move in strong player's games but it's very common for weaker players to atari when they shouldn't)
- Defend your weakness
- Say Thank You when your opponent gives you dead stones.

The final diagram indicates a misscoring. Black has 10 points in unclaimed territory.

Would :b19: at M5 (or N5) have been a good response? Thinking is to force white to find a way to live under a black wall with a large existing black presence. At the start of that battle, black isn't in any real danger, so just has to think about staying connected and keeping white isolated.

Since no one stronger than me has answered I will give my 4k opinion. I would not even consider a move like that unless the stone at Q10 was Black instead of White, so that my wall would already be super useful. As it is, if Black makes a wall and White plays a move like R7, it will blunt the wall very effectively. Even if Black finishes the sequence below in sente, and plays R12 (he wouldn't want to start with R8, making a very small amount of territory with a strong wall), White will still make a base and I don't think Black got enough out of it.

With all of the strength Black has on the bottom, I think that when White invades you have to attack him.

Corrections from strong players welcome!

Even with the white stone on the side, playing from the outside looks ok to me, and better than the move in the game (e.g. following m5 white push and cut black plays ko lock to build a wall and then q12). I would even be tempted to tenuki and play at the top right seeing as white's invasion is dubious direction (I think he should extend from his side stone/approach top right). Also f15 and c10 are big.
