I got a promotion off this game, but it was filled with so much mistakes, I feel. Some tips on local fighting techniques would be greatly appreciated.

Hi negapesuo,

:b7: - :w8: This exchange may be too good for W.
For :b7:, maybe 3-3 or tenuki... possible.
( Even when :w6: is at F3, AG seemed to play :b7: rarely. )

:b13: E8 also big.

:b17: Seems strange.

:b19: Seems better to play here directly, without the :b17: - :w18: exchange.

:b35: C16.

:b37: If :b35: at C16, then you can resist at E15.

:b43: Why. Why is this stone important ? What is it doing globally ?

:b45: This hane-block-atari helps W's eye shape.
If you jump to K18, W has to be careful ( B E18 ).

:b61: M15. There's also a peep at M18.

:b63: N14.

:b67: N12.

:b69: M12. Compare your board here to if you had M15 at :b61: .

:b73: R17.

:b77: Why are you following W ? S13.

:b87: :-?
( :b83: & :b85: ... Compare to :b83: at P12 directly. )

:b93: 3-3.

:black: 101 Already in trouble from earlier mistakes. S19 ( Locally, B still dead shape ).

:white: 106 S18.

:black: 107 S18.

:white: 180 S18.

Thanks Ed

The thing that I definitely have a hard time around is evaluating whether an exchange is beneficial at the moment. The concept is very foreign to me, and I don't know how people know that ahead of time.

Hi negapesuo,

Very good question; also, very common.
Example of a local exchange:
( Ignore any life-and-death issues;
we just look at this local sequence for now. )
Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$B variation 1
$$ ? , . . . . . , . . O . . , . . . |
$$ ? X X X X X X X O O . O O O O O O |
$$ ? . . . . . . 5 1 2 . . . . . . . |
$$ ? . . . . . . . 3 4 . . . . . . . |
$$ -----------------------------------[/go]
Let's rewind. First, B makes the exchange of :b1: and :w2: :
Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$B var 1.1
$$ ? , . . . . . , . . O . . , . . . |
$$ ? X X X X X X X O O . O O O O O O |
$$ ? . . . . . . . 1 2 . . . . . . . |
$$ ? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ -----------------------------------[/go]
Then, B makes the exchange of :b3: and :w4: :
Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$B var 1.2
$$ ? , . . . . . , . . O . . , . . . |
$$ ? X X X X X X X O O . O O O O O O |
$$ ? . . . . . . . X O . . . . . . . |
$$ ? . . . . . . . 3 4 . . . . . . . |
$$ -----------------------------------[/go]
Finally, B fixes the cut with :b5: :
Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$B var 1.3
$$ ? , . . . . . , . . O . . , . . . |
$$ ? X X X X X X X O O . O O O O O O |
$$ ? . . . . . . 5 X O . . . . . . . |
$$ ? . . . . . . . X O . . . . . . . |
$$ -----------------------------------[/go]
Since :b3: and :b5: go together, we can say B makes the exchange of ( :b3: + :b5: ) with :w4:.

What do you think of this exchange: ( :b3: + :b5: ) with :w4: ?

For comparison, here's a slightly different local sequence.
The first part is the same as var 1.1 --
B exchanges :b1: with :w2: :
Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$B var 2.1 ( same as 1.1 )
$$ ? . . . . . . , . . O . . , . . . |
$$ ? X X X X X X X O O . O O O O O O |
$$ ? . . . . . . . 1 2 . . . . . . . |
$$ ? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ -----------------------------------[/go]
The next part is different.
Instead of dropping to the first line as in var 1.2,
this time B just connects:
Click Here To Show Diagram Code
[go]$$B var 2.2
$$ ? . . . . . . , . . O . . , . . . |
$$ ? X X X X X X X O O . O O O O O O |
$$ ? . . . . . . 3 1 2 . . . . . . . |
$$ ? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ -----------------------------------[/go]

Survey:
  • Have you experienced a similar local situation in your own games, as Black ( at var 1.1 ) ?
  • Which local reply :b3: did you choose ? 1st line drop (var 1.2) or connect (var 2.2) ?
  • Var 1 and var 2.2: how are they different (could be more than one aspect) ?
