I've been off the grid for a while, since I had a kid three years ago. Now that my son is a little bigger and more independant, I'm thinking of coming back to the game. Problem is: I was never really good and, on top of that, I'm rusty. So I'm forgetting basic joseki patterns and tesuji. Direction of Play has always been a problem to me. Even more so now. Please take a look at my game and point out what I need to work on with more urgency.

Hi Menezes,

Welcome back.

:w16: Both remember this sequence, up to here.

:b17: Bad habit. Aji keshi. ( Self-reduce liberties, waste 1 ko threat, etc. )
This exchange good for :white:, bad for :black: .

:w20: No problem; these days, AlphaGo ( and Leela, etc. ) would even 3-3 on :w6: directly ( or earlier! ) If you want Leela's winrates for 3-3 vs. jump out, you can now ask it. :)

:b21: Strange.

:w22: White has to keep an eye on B's huge moyo. But you're not too worried right now because of :w20: . The exact invasion point is difficult for humans. (*)

:b23: This feeling will never go away, even for top humans ( vs. AZ ).

:b35: Almost a pass.

:w36: Take! L4. :black: played 2 iffy moves ( :b21:, :b35: ) You're so happy to L4 and completely destroy his moyo. Instead, you return the favor and pass.

:w38: No, take, the game move, is better. ( To quote Kageyama(?), when :b35: passed, your hand should tremble with anticipation to take! :) ) L3, :black: has the ladder!

:b39: Another pass.

:w40: You have to be ready for :white: push at P4, then atari-cut variation.
Just drop at N2 is not small; if you also get N2 you're alive.

:w42: This shape has issues ( what's your plan if :black: hane-cut P5 ? )

:b51:, :b53:, :b55:, :b57:, :b59: What are these :black: stones doing ?

:w78: Important, otherwise :black: R18 aji.

:b79: Another pass.

Didn't notice the result :white: +36.5 until now.
:black: played too many passes, slow moves.
Perhaps another game where your opponent fights back much more severely is more valuable.
( But we can still learn from our opponent's mistakes; e.g. :b17: bad habit, etc. )

:w84: You lose 2+ points here. Just D18 directly.

:b93: Key question: can you kill ?

:w94: If you're confident about your reading and fighting skills,
you can go for the kill (say M12, etc.).

:white: 100 The timing of this move... (re: :w94: ) :study:

:white: 124, :white: 126 If your plan was :white: 126, then push down at R5 directly on :white: 124.

_______
(*) Curious about Leela's evaluations.

Leela Zero (latest network, #123) plays :w22: at C13 and already has White's win rate at 68.2%. The other move it considers strongly is the other 3-3 invasion (65.9%).

Thanks, dfan. I suspect LZ ( and AZ ) evaluate :b6: as inefficient ( game losing ). Chinese opening, san ran sei, etc. will disappear from top pro games.

Thanks for the insights. I guess I could have done worse. What about the middle game and endgame? I didn't know what to ask, that's why there are no more comments on the sgf file.
