I was just playing a game on Tygem on my iPad. I was behind, but wanted to get to the counting stage. My opponent took several minutes of not doing anything, then, suddenly, the app told me that White won by resign. (I was black.) How did it force me to resign? I didn't tap the Resignation button; I didn't run out of time, in fact, my opponent's time was running, not mine.

Something very fishy here...

Maybe your iPad was lagging and in reality your time ran out?

I had like 10 minutes left.

Tygem admins can control game results. If you were clearly behind, it is possible that your opponent raised a dispute with an admin and the admin forced the result.

If this did happen, I don't know what it would look like on the ipad UI.

Did he try to chat with you first?

Why would there be a dispute? It was up to my opponent to pass, then I was going to pass. Seriously? An admin can just end a game on a whim?

There's no chat feature on the iPad client.

If he thought you were able to get his messages, I might picture something like:

A:Hey, there's no chance for you to come back. I've gotta go, so could you resign?

You:...

A:Hey, answer me... etc.

"A" calls admin and says that he needs to go but you don't resign. The admin sees that "A" will win, tries to chat with you, then just sets the game result.

---

This is all hypothetical, of course. It seems that an adkin should be able to tell if you are on a "no-chat" client, too, so maybe the scenario I'm describing isn't likely to happen.

The reason I bring it up is because I once played a game where I was behind, but the opponent didn't mark one of his dead groups dead. I tried to say this in Korean to him, but he kept telling me to end the game. Even with his stones marked dead, I still would lose, but I argued on principle.

It could be that my korean was poor, as I'm not a native speaker. In any case, he called an admin. The admin was polite and listened to my case, but said that the game result did not depend on the group status - which was true. After this, he forced a resign.

So I know admins can do this, but I am just speculating about a possible cause for the behavior you observed.

Did any dialogs pop up? He probably expected you to hit the "counting" button.

No dialogs. He just filled all the dame points, then did nothing for a few minutes, then I was told I lost by resignation.

I just finished playing a game with the iPad client on Tygem.

I found it odd that there was no way to chat. I wanted to say "thank you" at least if possible.

I had no idea how the scoring would take place. But when I had passed a few times my opp did eventually pass and a scoring box came up which said the score and asked if I agreed. I was kind of wondering what would happen if I disagreed. As it was I had won and did agree with that result. I suppose the day will come when I won't agree and I will find out what happens in that case.

I enjoy playing there.

Tygem's autoscore feature is remarkably accurate; I've played hundreds of games on Tygem, and never had an issue with it.
