Hey? Something got lost in the trasnlation there I think. What is the link between pro and a left wing party? Or do you mean a closed shop trade union (a guild), which is kind of how the Asian systems work?

But I do agree in your charactarisation of the Asian pro system. Why do we need to copy their titles if we change the system to gainb that title and undermine the logic behind it?

Hi, I just checked the website and don't see anything except the list of names that has been up there for some months. I'd like to know if there is anything going on behind the scenes actually, or if the project just evaporated? ^^'

So I assume everyone still knows nothing? This doesn't bode well for the organization. I hope it does actually happen, but the structure might turn out better if they actually told us what's going on (if anything) and allowed people to contribute suggestions on how to organize it.

I'd be less worried about losing feedback. Not everything depends on the wisdom of forum posters.

But I would be worried about being taken seriously. This project seems to depend both on the actual activities of the players and the appearance that the league is thriving. Months and months of silence does nothing to get people to take the aspiring European professionals seriously.

As much as I would like, I obviously can't give a direct answer. My political views can best be described as classic liberal, so you can judge for yourself, why I would dislike such a thing.

And the lack of reports here and elsewhere probably means that not much happened in this direction as well. I mean if you are trying to establish such a league you can get sponsorship 1) because you generate a large enough public interesting for advertising etc. 2) as development effort (what the ING foundation did) - if you don't build that public you have no chance to establish something like this at all. The necessary sponsorship sum was 100k $ upwards per year, wasn't it? (Seems unlikely to get it as development effort and unlikely to raise that much by sponsorship either. Compare to the money companies spent for Go in the big three with hundreds of thousands or millions interested in the tournaments.)

Wow, it is sad to see a post containing so much fear of the "generalised unknown" that is communism, all packed together in one short word. Admins, how does this not violate the TOS?

Perhaps nagano can explain further, but to me, "Yikes" indicates great surprise, and isn't necessarily implying anything negative.

Nagano, was there a further inflection in the use of the word?

I completely understand fear of communism. Yet, it has been abused too often (particularly, I feel, in Western/American media) to carelessly discard many pragmatic ideas just because they resemble socialism. I feel that it is not really fair to allow someone to propagate that fear here when the terms of service, perhaps justly, do not allow for a sensible reply.

Aside from that though, I think that posting "yikes, [insert political ideology here]" without explanation is little more than trolling, which is quite annoying in my view.

@gaius It was intended to be tongue-in-cheek. I have studied economic and political theory and, yes, I do not agree with the Communist system. My disagreement is not based upon fear but rational study. It was an offhand remark, and I did not intend to offend anyone, or to violate the TOS. Please do not try to make an issue here where there need be none. I do not wish to discuss the topic further.

Recent news from Kim Sungrae, 8p (Insei League teacher and my friend), who suggested to start European Pro League during the last AGM on EGC-2010. He was even faster than Harry from EuroGoTV:

"I suggested the three steps and these were passed by the professional board meeting.

The first step is making 12 European professional players by KBA. They can participate in Professional tournament in Korea.

The second step is making the European Professional Go Association in 2012.

The third step is finding the sponsors and making professional tournaments. "

Not sure if Kim-sabbonim has some sponsors in mind, but anyway it's good that this idea is supported by Korean Baduk Association.

Wow, European pros playing in Korean pro-tournaments sounds like an excellent idea! This kind of league would add so much recognition to go in Europe - let's hope it all works out :).
