Hi all,

It's my b-day on 21st July, and I've asked for a BGA membership.
I'm really looking forward to seeing if there are any members that live nearby to me with the hope of eventually setting up a Go club in my home town. (Grimsby, UK)

I'd just like to ask any BGA members if there are any other benefits I will see by becoming a member?
Cheaper tournament fees etc?

Off the top of my head, benefits of membership are:
- Cheaper tournament fees. Tournaments mostly reduce the fee for BGA members (and I think they're supposed to), though occasionally they're lazy and don't.
- Access to BGA things like the shodan challenge.
- BGA discount for go books and probably kit. I can't remember who the current supplier is (pentangle games?) but you can find it on their website.

The final, often overlooked benefit is that you help keep the national go organisation going. The BGA provide help to tournaments such as moving all the go kit around, and possibly even things like event insurance. You still get these benefits without being a member, but by joining you make sure they can continue to provide this background help.

There's probably a complete list of benefits at www.britgo.org .

Welcome to the BGA.

Please write to the Membership Secretary (mem@britgo.org) for details of other members local to you.

I got an e-mail back from the secretary and it seems I am the only BGA member in my entire county! The nearest club is an hour's drive away.

I'm sure I'm not the only Go player in my area, so I have made it my mission to seek them out and maybe set up our own club.

Heh don't hold your breath...

 Have you tried to find people on Igolocal.net?

Join Shodan challenge. I may be your mentor
