Some time ago, there was some discussion on the importance of being well rounded. I think Bill Spight mentioned something about this. I questioned this methodology, feeling that you should spend time studying on that which is most efficient to improve. After further discussion in that thread, wherever it was, along with some thinking, I think there's merit to the idea of being well rounded.

I had a question at the time, to which I didn't really get a response:

Okay, it's not really a quote, but it's just a recollection of what I think I asked.

I don't know the answer to this, but maybe I can find the answer if I try to do things differently in my study. So I typically just do go problems and games for study, but I decided I'll try to go over pro games from time to time.

Exercise
As an exercise, I decided to comment on a pro game the same way that I comment on my own games in this thread. After all, this is my "study journal", so if I study a pro game and have thoughts, I might as well post it here.

For fun, before each move, I thought about the position, and decided where I thought I would play, and gave this variation. I did this before looking at the next move, then I could see where my thoughts varied from the pro's.

I didn't do it intentionally, but I think most of my thoughts and comments were from black's perspective. I guess that's because I prefer playing black.

You can see from my comments areas where my thoughts are different from the pro thoughts (i.e. likely incorrect).

Here are a few highlights of my initial reaction vs. what was played:

Position 1

In the game, I considered the two space extension on the 4th line here. Black played at the marked intersection to exploit white's shape. I feel black's play is probably sharper. Although, white later invaded, so I'm not so sure about the position.

Position 2

After move 26, I was concerned about helping the center black group with a knight's move. I felt OK to ditch the single stone on the right to strengthen this group.

Cho U 9p decided to bring out the black stone. His plan was more ambitious, and I feel I "gave up" a bit. He had a more hard-working plan, so it's probably a big difference in mentality here.

Position 3

My gut reaction was actually the same as the move played in the game here for black (the knight's jump out). But after closer thought, I'm not sure how black responds when white cuts in this way:

I guess this can tell me that my instinct was OK in this case, but if my instinct were challenged in a game, I might fail here.

Position 4
In this position, my intuition was to jump into the 3-3 point for immediate profit, letting the weak black stones be. Pro thought was to persist in utilizing the stones, and not to jump into the corner, yet.

Summary

Some general points that I can learn from these positions where my thoughts differed from pro thoughts:

1.) Perhaps I give up stones that I feel are too weak too easily. Some examples are when I didn't think to move out the single stone on the right in the position above, and also when I decided to dive directly into 3-3 when I felt outnumbered in the bottom left.

2.) I need sharper tactical moves, above global dull moves. I'm thinking of Position 1 here.

3.) In general, I need better reading skills to back up intuition, such as in Position 3, above.

I decided to play another game online today. Since I reviewed a pro game recently, I wanted to review one of my own games, again. So I played one. The time limits were 30 minutes per person plus byo-yomi, but I feel that this is not enough time for me these days. Oh well.

Here's the game:



There were some key moments in this game, where my reading was lax, and I could have lost by a lot. My opponent was a bit lax, and just responded. Because he didn't punish me strictly, I was able to win, but against another opponent, or in a different game, I would have lost.

I need to be careful of this.

By connecting, you hurt black's lone stone. It will be hard for black to launch a successful attack. Black taking the corner doesn't seem much of a problem, because white's stone on the right still has plenty of space. Besides that, there isn't any other move I can think of, you can't afford to let black cut you.

In line with what I did a couple of days ago, I reviewed another pro game. This time between Lee Sedol and Choi Cheolhan.

Again, I did the exercise I mentioned above of trying to guess the move before it was played. But I have to say, given the amount of "misses" I had in my guesses vs. the real game moves, I did not understand this game very well. For a large portion of the moves, the game move was different than what I guessed.

Still, it was a fun exercise.

Fundamentally, this difference must come down to reading. I must be solid when the position requires it, and not solid when it does not.

So one might wonder why white cut to begin with, if he was going to come back and help this group anyway. I can think of two reasons:

1.) The cut forces black to decide how to respond. After getting the response, white can adjust his plan (i.e. a probe).
2.) The cut serves benefit in strengthening the side white group. Because of the cut, white has the atari at the marked intersection, so indirectly, the entire group is stronger.

I had no idea of this kind of idea. When I cut, typically, I assume I must immediately live with the cutting stones. In this case, the cutting stone was a tool - it did not need to necessarily survive - it served other purposes as well.

I was totally blind to the idea that the black stones could be attacked. Black immediately strengthened the group, but this wasn't even in my line of thought.

Perhaps it's something basic, but I should remember that, after every move, I need to consider the implications of any attack on my groups.

I think in all cases, every stone is "just a tool"; it's easy to forget this.
I've heard even some high dan amateurs have trouble letting go of some stones.
And it's so nice to see that Go Seigen's moves are super flexible -- he's always
ready to give up his groups, no matter how big, if he thinks he gets a better trade.

I looked into this a little further, and there are a few examples I found in my database of pro play in the local position in the top right corner, however the situation is very rare.

So based on the small set of data that I have for this position, the most popular choice was top jump into 3-3, leaving the option to connect the stones later. The second most popular, which happened in one game, was to connect the stones.

That being said, what kind of analysis can you really do with 4 games? I feel that connecting and the 3-3 are certainly options, since we have some pros that played these moves, but it's hard to tell from this data alone whether connecting is best, 3-3 is best, or if there are other alternatives.

When I play go, I sometimes think about territory, but usually I am thinking more abstractly (eg. let's see if I can pressure this group, I'll have to play lightly here, he has a lot of influence, etc.). This might be a good thing, since go theory has developed a lot in recent years, but it made me wonder about making a connection to the result of a game and what happens earlier.

As an exercise, I took a handful of the last few games I've played, and went straight to the end position. From the end position, I tried to consider the area on the board where I got the most territory, and then I asked myself, "Why did I get a lot of territory in this area?" Playing back through the games, I can consider a few key moves that led to the big chunk of territory there.

I'm not sure if this was a slow move, but playing the marked point allowed for me to secure my claim to territory in this area. But this is not to say that the corner didn't have value before I played this move. I had stones outlining a framework before this. How did this occur?

In the fight in the upper left, I was able to cut and start to make territory on the side. To be honest, I feel that this part of the game is one in which I played poorly. But in any case, as a result, white was able to gain potential for points on the left, while black's group still needed a couple of moves to get settled. Because my cut at :b4:, above, is probably not good, black could get benefit in the center.

Still, the movement of my stones on the left allowed for potential territory on the left at the end of the game.

I ended up capturing the cutting stone, so it turned into a lot of territory for white. Black may have been able to counter this, but in any case, this is how things happened in the game.

Now it may be the case that I could have killed him somewhere along the way in this attack. But clearly, the sequence got to a point where I could not read out a clean kill, and for the sake of a *possible* kill, I went all out, ignoring whatever benefit I could have gotten from the attack in a more subtle way.


General Thoughts

Games 3 and 4 are different from the others in that these were situations where the end result was clearly determined by a large kill. Clearly, getting a large kill can lead to significant territory at the end of the game. But we can see from Game 4 that I could have gotten territory in another way. For example, I don't know the best way to attack his stones, but I should at least be able to get as much territory as I could by playing simply to get points in this area:

If I had gotten all of those points, that's pretty significant. I don't think it's good to passively take territory like this, but I should not be so willing to risk the result of the game, if I am not sure that I can get at least as good as benefit as I can by playing in a non-fighting way.

In Game 1, I was able to secure territory along the bottom left side both by a gote move to solidify the potential territory, and also by keeping pressure on his floating group. This gave me lots of points in the end, even though it could have potentially been exploited. Game 2 also obtained natural territory along the top by attacking his stone, but earlier stones I played were indeed damaged by a fight I was having in the center.

If I think of these points in consolidation, I feel that I see a simple, yet obvious theme: I can make these big areas of territory by pressuring or attacking the opponent. But I should not do so at the cost of ruining what I already have. Pressure can allow me to get points, but I must not give in to the temptation to give up the existing stones in order to gain more territory later. Instead, utilize each stone, and find a way to naturally make points by keeping pressure on his group. This seems to be a pattern in my ability to make points in a given area.

I went to the local go club yesterday. I arrived a little late, but played two games. The first was against a 3k, and I gave them three stones. I am not great at handicap games, but somehow I killed a large group and won.

The second was against a 2 or 3d player, whom I will refer to as "Mr. L", so as to protect his identity. We played without handicap. By the time we started, it was getting late already, so the quality of the game could have been better. Some people were waiting for a ride from Mr. L, which made us both uncomfortable.

Still, it was an educational game with a few key learning points.

I suspect 'a', 'b', or 'c' would be good, but it was hard for me to decide - I particularly didn't like 'b'.

General Thoughts

Reflecting on the game, I think that we both felt a bit rushed, so that made us both make some pretty big mistakes. On the other hand, there were obvious misreads that I had, which shouldn't have happened, even under time pressure.

These days I have been focusing on studying things other than go problems, to try something different. But maybe I should start incorporating that kind of study again, too.

Because reading is essential, and I can see some gaps in my reading in this game:
* My ko threat
* Status of the white group on the bottom
* Status of black group on top

All of the above should have been things that I should have done better with, and reading better and recognizing patterns faster could have helped.

Thanks, VincentCB. I particularly like your idea for the first diagram. The reason I didn't play the attachment was because I have had bad luck with a white stone in the top, but it's early in the fuseki, so I can play there to see how he responds first.

I see the same sort of result in a database search, and incidentally, perhaps the same game (Shi Yue vs. Wang Lei Sr.). However, perhaps this could be because there are only 5 games where white approaches here:

For kicks, I took all of the text from comments that have been posted in this study journal (not including this post), with the exception of repeated quotes and the SGF files, and I created a word graph of what people (myself included) have said during throughout the discussion on this thread:

It's not surprising to me that "play" and "game" stand out in the image, but maybe it gives an overall sense of the discussion happening in this journal. We talk a lot about games, positions, thinking, white and black, time, and stones.

Relatively infrequently, we talk about "reason" and "problem". :-)

Of course, this is just for fun, but maybe I should focus more on the reasons behind the problems I encounter in my games! ;-)
