Lost due to misread, again. I need to be more careful. I read quickly sometimes, and have some confidence, but I miss a line.

More problems are needed, I guess.

Here's the game with my comments:

Some positions I'm not sure about.

The weak point around 'a' bugs me. On the other hand, I can't think of an elegant way to protect it. I'm inclined to leave the attack, or maybe to defend at 'b'. Nothing seems totally satisfying.

I wonder if my move above is an overplay. After black's simple extension, I was a bit at a loss.

But it doesn't feel totally satisfying.

After dying on the left, I flipped on my "desperation mode" switch, so I'm not sure how valuable the analysis is after that.

I took a look at the pro game a little bit from the other thread.

Not seriously studying the game, but more like just clicking through it, seeing where I would have played differently.

I'm trying to study more pro games, but it's a little boring to me.

Maybe if I keep doing it, I'll get more interested in pro games.

I don't want to dwell too much on this game. I think this move summarizes my attitude:

He played tenuki with 'a'. Of course my move isn't sente, and it can't be that big.

Very careless.

Maybe I was in "handicap mode". Either way, another loss.

I'll try to focus more next time.

I decided to play in the Seattle Go Center's Anniversary tournament. I didn't study a lot this week because I have been pretty sick (flu, maybe?).

Normally I play in the handicap section, but they hadn't 7 out of the desired 8 players for the strong player open section. I signed up to make an even 8, and I'm by far the weakest player (only player close to me is 2 stone stone stronger).

I just finished my first game. My opponents is white, and apparently, an ex-insei from Japan. He registered as 8d.

Needless to say, I embarrassed myself.

Here's the game:

I resigned.

I like the prospect of playing stronger players, but with such a gap in strength, are we even really playing a game?

Here's is what I remember from round 2. I was white against aga 3d. I won the game.

Someone dropped out of the open, and since I was the weakest player, it meant I got a bye for round 3.

I see the last move is wrong - should be D12. I was just recording on my phone from memory, so I think I messed that one up.

Now that I'm back at home, I thought I'd annotate the game I played with the 8d guy, with the comments he kindly provided me at lunch.

Here's the annotated SGF:

One of the biggest comments he had was with my double hane. He said that the feeling was simply that I was rushed. I pointed out that I was behind, but he said there's still a chance. If I rush like that, then it becomes the case that there is no chance.

So:
* No rush, tiny chance > rush out of emotion from being behind, no chance

I checked using Leela - it slightly prefers your hane, over the nobi suggested by your opponent.

By the way, an interesting exercise is to switch colors and play against Leela from some point in the game - for instance, from the point you played double-hane, you can play white and let Leela play black and see how it tries to deal with that kind of position.

Leela should be about the same strength as your opponent in this game, I think.

I'm also surprised the double hane was the move he criticised most: extend or hane are both plausible moves and need some thinking and judgement to decide which way to go. On the other hand your 73 is a really big shape mistake in a hot fight when there is one clearly superior move (though you need to spot the snapback). In fact I wonder if his cut atari after double hane is premature: my thinking is he should probe on the top side first as you could try to make him wish he'd done the other atari.

Been awhile since I posted here. Not sure why, but somehow, I lost a bit of interest in go, it seems. Contrary to earlier times, I don't really feel bad or guilty about it. Maybe it's because of my job. Or maybe it's because of alphago. I don't really know. Go is still kind of interesting to me, but maybe just as a fun game to play now and then.

Maybe I'm getting more apathetic as I get older(?)...

Anyway, I started up in the AYD again, and played my first game.

Here's the game record.

It's been awhile since I played a game, so it was kind of fun. Maybe I'll get back into go after a few more games.

We'll see...

Welcome back.

I think your games are interesting as you are willing to explore harder lines than I would consider early in the game. The touch here is novel:

Is the game line a new joseki? At first I speculated that maybe you either confused the position with another one or were just making it up as you went along, but I'm not sure. (I am also in AYD but I haven't watched the review yet so I'm not influenced by that.)

In any case, by :b23: the position clearly favors black, so we must find white's mistake(s). :w14:, forcing black to connect with more liberties is clearly a suspect, but even earlier, what's black's plan if white simply connects at :w4: here, aiming at both 'a' and 'b'?

I didn’t think about it much, but if white blocks at H17 in the game, I might have a hard time.

To your inquiry, I was just making it up as I went along :-)
