Thanks for the variations, SoDesuNe. :D

Variations with many playouts can be quite instructive.

I was a bit surprised that LZ did not prefer the empty corner for :w8:, But that just shows how good the press is. :)

Still don’t really *feel* the point about :w20: - white’s shape seems totally strong to me, and it gets more territory. LZ disagrees, so maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t see it.

I guess after black answers the descent, white’s shape is a bit weaker. Dunno - the proposed move seems over concentrated to me.

Well, in the top right corner White has two more stones than Black. That was also the case in the game. :) The :bc: stones are weak, but they can be treated lightly. However, with the pole connection they are weaker than in the game. I said that White threatens to push and cut, but that would not be a good idea right away. Rather White should attack on a larger scale.

Waltheri has 49 pro games where White played the connection, 1 game where White played the descent. There are two games with the same local shape with the descent. In both cases the player with the corner had strength on the side, including a stone at a.

My parents visited our place this weekend, which is rather uncommon, so I didn't run or study go according to schedule.

But today is Monday, and I'm back on track.

Here is a game I just played on KGS, with my own thoughts:

I haven't analyzed with LZ, yet.

Some highlights:

$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Above, I just assumed this would be sente, and I wanted to punish black for ignoring me. But I couldn't find a way to make it really work absolutely.

So I think I should have just played here:

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

I think black got some definite benefit from ignoring me and stuff, but at least he doesn't get a double approach, and the game is somewhat normal.

This is a recurring theme for me - things don't go according to plan, and I want to punish or get sente - push forward. When it works, great. But unfortunately, that reinforces the feeling, so I do this way even when it doesn't work sometimes, and I fall behind.

I should acquiesce, like I said in the previous post, and just respond normally. Then black didn't really get punished or anything, but I have a semi-normal position around the board, instead of being destroyed.

...

Frankly, I thought there were more highlights, but that's really the main point I want to emphasize. I feel I fell pretty far behind right there, and don't feel like I caught up for the rest of the game.

I'll look at this with a computer AI shortly.

A brief look with LZ shows agreement with my assessment. But, I should connect solidly:

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

LZ puts me at around 58~59% here. LZ usually seems to like white in the opening, so it seems pretty even. But at least I don't fall so far behind. When I play as I did in the game and get double approached, my win rate drops to around 44.

Skimming through the game analysis, one other interesting point is right here:

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . O . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

LZ seems to think this move put me back in the game, and recommends the marked place for me to play. I don't really understand this mid-game analysis that well, but I guess it means that I still have a chance of winning...

I'll say that the biggest takeaway is this:
1. I should have been satisfied to get a solid shape around black's bottom right corner, take sente, then continue on the bottom left.

In short: I don't need to hit a jackpot - just taking some small profit, then moving on to get a "normal" result elsewhere can be good enough. I don't need to "punish" black and get huge profit.

Today's game was against a 1k. I think I played him a few days ago at 2 stones, but I dropped a rank after losing the last couple of games on KGS.

Anyway, here is the game:

My pre-AI review thoughts:

Position 1

Black just played the move above. I can play the simple move at 'a', or the complicated one at 'b'. Of course, I chose 'b'. In retrospect, I think simple and good is better.

Black does get to surround me on both sides, but hey, I get sente, and it's not that bad of a position.

If I take 'a', I get the corner. But as it turned out in the game:

He got the corner. I think just doing a simple way is better here.

In the position above, I wanted to take away black's base potential on the side, around 'a'. But I think I missed the chance to strengthen my group. I'm thinking something like this:

I'm not sure what the best local move is, but I think I should probably put pressure on the bottom first. It's a bit tricky, because the worry would be that he'd ignore, and then extend on the top like this:

Because he's already alive. So, I'm not 100% sure. The game might have been OK, but I don't really like the result.

I have some cutting points, but I think the result may be better for me than in the game.

Anyway, that's about it from my review.

To summarize, there's a reading issue, and then the bigger takeaway I want to grab is:
* Keep things simple if it's a decent result.

From that regard, maybe my last diagram is not necessarily a good thing.

Some thoughts from LZ:

LZ didn't seem to think my cutting option in the bottom right was so bad. However, instead of extending, suggested this:

(in the game, I played 'a').

This makes sense to me - it was very painful for black to get the turn in sente. I should avoid this.

LZ really didn't like my push here, and reversed the win/loss status of the game (it said I went from being ahead to being behind):

I agree that the shape is better. I'm surprised that it was such a swing in value from LZ's analysis.

LZ had some other variations, but that was the most interesting stuff to me.

On Wednesday, I woke up feeling satisfied that I had been consistent with running on a regular basis, doing problems, and with playing games. So I decided to take a break. I didn't run, didn't do problems, and didn't play a game. Well, I did a few problems. But no game and no running. Furthermore, I had a big lunch.

It felt nice to relax at first, but when I looked back on the day, I felt bad about it. I want to avoid days like that in the future. So maybe when I feel like I've been doing well, I'll just take it easy, but still do those activities - a light run, a casual game, or some easy problems. Then at least I'm doing something, and I'm still getting some rest.

Anyway, I came back today, and ran pretty hard this morning. Then I rode the bus to go to work, and did some problems. But I was making mistakes. I thought I'd have the answer, and then I checked the solution, and it was wrong. I don't feel sharp today.

But anyway, I already took a break the other day, so I wanted to play a game today, nonetheless. So here it is: I played a 2k on KGS. I felt like I wasn't sharp today, and I almost lost the game. But I guess I got a bit lucky, and took away a win.

Here is the game with some comments:

And now, as usual, some pre-AI analysis highlights.

I feel the move above is slightly questionable. I expected black to play there, which is why I took it. But I don't know if moving out my stone has definite benefit right now. And if he comes back and plays a move to stop me from moving out, he's a move behind anyway.

That being said, I don't know where the best place to play is. Some ideas that stick out are:

A move on the side, like above, helps me with territory, and also plays a role in reducing the center... Both seem reasonable to me.

The move above is the biggest psychological problem that I feel this game. I tried to read something that would work with this move, failed, and played it anyway. I figured he'd play passive or that I could trick him.

Bad way of playing.

---

Those are the main points I want to highlight from this game, from my personal review.

The biggest takeaway I have is from that last position:
1. When I read something doesn't work, don't play it. Don't hope for the opponent to make a mistake.

I think that this advice goes along well with my earlier thoughts about acquiescing when I've made a small failure locally: don't play something that doesn't work. Be patient, and wait for something that works.

Patience is hard.

Above, I can still aim at 'a' or 'b'. I felt satisfied in the game to take a single stone, but LZ wasn't so happy about it.

LZ also agreed that playing on the right side was bigger than this, as I suspected in the review:

I don't really have time for more right now. I have to go back to work.

As usual, I went to play a game on KGS today. I setup a game offer, and put on automatch simultaneously. After some time, a was paired with a 1k on automatch. I started with a 5-3, and he answered. Then I thought about how to proceed for a little bit, and he resigned for some reason. Maybe he wanted a faster game.

So then, I did another automatch request - got paired with the same person, and then he disconnected. Maybe he just didn’t want to play against me.

Anyway, then I waited for awhile, still no match… Wasn’t working well. So I tried IGS - I haven’t played a game on IGS in ages. I challenged a few folks, but they all declined (or didn’t answer). Normally, I’d try Tygem at this point, but I’ve been having issues recently running Tygem with wine - I can’t seem to get it to launch because of some error, so I haven’t played there in awhile. I could play Tygem on my phone, but I don’t really want to do that.

So I decided to play on OGS - I don’t play there often at all. I logged in, and somehow, my account is 6k there. Maybe I played some games messing around before. Or maybe OGS ranks are harder than KGS - I dunno.

Anyway, I was paired against a 5k. Here is the game:

Playing against him, I felt that the level was a bit stronger than 5k on KGS.

Anyway, here are some of the highlights from my review (pre-AI):

I felt I should play as above, because if I answer in a normal way at ‘a’, then the marked black stone is in a little bit of a weird spot. I’m not sure if my logic is correct, though, because if I play at ‘a’, it ALSO hurts the marked white stone (so the peep might have been bad anyway).

I think that the marked black stone is a little bit slack, above. I should extend all the way to one space above the white stone on the right. Playing that way doesn’t secure the corner as well, but I need to put pressure on the opponent.

I think the marked move above is the worst play in the game, psychologically. I put a lot on the line, when I didn’t have a clear way in my mind of how to live with the group. I think I can just play endgame and come out OK from this board position, so I think it’s a bad idea to put that much risk into the game.

That’s it for now - I’ll do a quick review with LZ next.

The summary from this review is:
* Don't put the game on the line when you think you can win by playing in a safe way.

Did a quick review with LZ. Maybe I was wrong about being able to win in endgame - maybe I was overconfident? LZ seems to think I have about no chance of winning then. So I guess I might have miscalculated.

I seem to have fallen behind by a good amount when I didn't take a position on the top. Then the sequence on the left in the late-middle game wasn't good for me, and I was pretty far behind.

SO I guess the new takeaway is:
* Work on my evaluation :-p

I am having a hard time finding games. I put on automatch for KGS for awhile, and no response. A guest with no rank challenged me, but I didn't want to do that given that I don't know if I'll get a good game.

Then I tried for about 15 minutes to get Tygem working on my non-windows computer. Kept getting some error:
Code:
fail cdlgconfig::windowProc
. I don't understand it, and I couldn't get Tygem working.

Then I went to OGS and tried the automatch there - still no challengers.

So then I looked up instructions on how to use that Fox server. It was surprisingly easy to register with a foreign account, and it ran well with wine.

So here's my first game on fox.

Just keep it simple - I'm losing points by trying to kill. Later, I lost a big group - I should just keep it simple.

So my takeaways are:
* Help weak groups about trying for big points.
* Keep the game simple when I'm ahead - no need to kill - just wrap it up.

Not gonna review with LZ today, because I spent too much time trying to get Tygem to work.

FWIW, Deep Leela (11) thinks that your suggested extension is best, but that your "greedy" play loses only 2½% by comparison. We can't even say it's a mistake. :) Edit: On second or third thought, DL thinks it lose only 1½%. ;) Edit2: Upon even more reflection (up to 60k playouts for each choice) it thinks it loses only ½%. :)

By contrast, ever since your unorthodox nobi at M-04, DL has thought that the bottom side is hot. It thinks your previous move,

Sorry, but I got curious.

DL thinks that :w34: (misremembered joseki?) loses 17% to the nobi to C-05, with over 100k playouts per option. That's a serious error.

Edit: More to come in a few minutes.

:w38: loses around 9% to the cut at D-05.

Just seeing this diagram, I can feel it. Definitely better than my move.

And, yeah - :w34: is bad. I didn't realize it was *that* bad, but I can buy it.

Second game on fox.

The atmosphere reminds me a little bit of Tygem. This includes the fact that most people seem to prefer quicker games (e.g. 10 minute time limit). I personally prefer a little bit longer, but I'll take what I can get these days.

Here's the SGF:

The move above is characteristic of my play. I want to *DO* something technical, even if the result isn't the best that I could get. I want to use the stones that are there.

Instead, I think I should step back, and take a breather.

Hard in a 10 minute game, but thinking about it calmly, I think I can just be like this:

$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

That's a decent result, and I can keep going. I don't need to go for doing everything I can do with all of the stones, if it's not leading to a better result.

Anyway, I've really gotta go. Highlights from this game are:
1. don't be so greedy - play back when it's enoguh
2. take abreather, step back, and play a non-technical move if it gives a better result than the technical move i'm thinking.

i should play more non-technical moves once in awhile if they give a better result

Today is go club day, so I was social with my coworkers and ate with them, instead of playing a game at lunch. I'll play some games tonight at the go club.

I did have something to note, though. Yesterday, traffic was kind of slow on the way home, so while I was stopped, I pulled out my laptop and did a quick LZ analysis on my game from yesterday. The results generally look pretty good for me, but there are two distinct points in time where I made some big mistakes which turned LZ's analysis around to saying my opponent was ahead.

LZ notes that I can always grab at least some points on the right by sliding underneath at 'a':

Maybe I can get cut off, but either way, I can stop black from getting a ton of points there.

So because of that, the win rates really turned on their head when I ignored white's push, and tried to do something fancy here. LZ wants me to just block and play normally at 'b'.

The other big turnaround was around the time of this peep:

LZ notes that my opponent doesn't have to respond to my peep, and can gain some advantage in this area. After my opponent responded, though, and when I continued to attack the group, the win rate gradually came back to my favor. That's about all the analysis I was able to do while my car was stopped - since I was in traffic, I couldn't really go for that many playouts, but that seemed to be the general gist of the game, according to shishou, er, i mean LZ.

Haha - don't worry - I really was stopped and not driving. It was just in the car in stopped traffic.

Went to the go club today, and had the most interesting game I've had in awhile.

I don't remember the exact sequence, but the beginning was something like this (I was white):

Notably, I had a brain burp, and ignored his threat in the center to take the top right corner. The top right corner was big profit, but I misread that he captures my center stones then.
