Welcome back Kirby!

Unfortunately, now that you have started thinking about your streak enough to post it here, you have stopped "not caring". I predict that your streak will end now. But no worries! You can post about the end of your streak too. I'll look forward to it. ;-)

Kind of. I mainly posted here, because I wanted to post before my streak ended, and I thought it was an interesting phenomenon: when I don't think much in the opening, it seems to serve me well.

I suppose the observation of this is a form of "caring", but when I play next Tuesday, I plan to continue to "not care" during the opening (i.e. minimal thinking time).

Welcome back Brian. I think your new attitude is healthy. And evidence that for many of us, pressure is just an artificial thing we carry around to our own detriment.

I just ran across this :)

When an archer is shooting for fun
He has all his skill.

If he shoots for a brass buckle
He is already nervous.

If he shoots for a prize of gold
He goes blind

Or sees two targets –
He is out of his mind.

His skill has not changed,
But the prize divides him.

He cares
He thinks more of winning
Than of shooting –
And the need to win
Drains him of power.

AYD day, again. Almost screwed this up - the top left incited an emotional reaction :-S

This week is an anomaly, because there's a game this Saturday. So I'll play again, then.

My streak ended.

Here's the game:

I've been aiming for being casual/not caring. But I think I went a little overboard when I didn't read the top that well, and got captured early. It was an uphill battle after that.

How do I feel?

I guess I feel disappointed. It's nice to have a winning streak. I don't feel a lot of pain, per se. Maybe a feeling that goes along with the phrase, "Aw, that's too bad..."

Oh well. Back to work tomorrow. The good thing is, from Friday, I'm taking a vacation for about a week. I won't do work during that time. Probably no go, either. But maybe I can relax a little bit.

I thought I'd post here. It's been awhile.

I haven't been studying go. That's mostly due to some reflection that I had over the past year. Since March 2020, I have been working from home. Skipping the commute, this gives me lots of extra control over my time, which I didn't have before. However, if I think back about the past year, while I had spurts of studying this and that (go, Korean, coursera courses, even some Chinese), I didn't make significant progress in any one area - I just learned bits in pieces in many areas.

So I decided to try to focus on just a single thing at a time. For now, that's Korean. I already know a lot of Korean, but I'd like to actually take the TOPIK test in the fall. It'll be a measuring stick for my current ability.

Oh yeah... Speaking of measuring sticks, I was curious the other day, so I wrote a small python script to grab all of the ratings from the AGA ratings website.

Image

Basically, as it currently stands, my AGA rating puts me somewhere around the 80~85 percentile (last in-person tournament I participated in isn't reflected, I think). That figure isn't exact, but it just gives me an idea of where I stand in the tournament-playing community. I'd like to improve that overall percentile - it'd be cool to be above the 90th percentile, for example.

But I have no real metric for where I'm at in Korean, so let's do that first.

All that single-focus mumbo jumbo being said, I'm still in the AYD. I don't go to the lectures, and don't listen to the reviews. But I play a game once a week.

Somehow, I'm in the A1 group right now, but I've lost the first two games. I expected to lose the first two, given my opponents. However, today's game, it seemed like I had a chance - running the game through KataGo seemed to corroborate this. According to KataGo, it was somewhat even, I fell behind, then I got really far ahead... And then I blundered and totally fell behind. Nonetheless, I'm happy I seemed to have a chance against this guy. He's usually totally beating me.

Here's the game:

Here's the game.

Best way to improve is watching Korean tv.

Here's the deal, folks. I haven't been actively studying go. Technically, I'm a part of the AYD, still, but that's mostly a way to take a break from work. Most of my energy goes into work, family, a second job, and a couple of classes I'm taking on the side.

But then I got Devin's email about the upcoming go tournament in Ohio. I'm in Michigan, so it's relatively close. So I figured, why not? The problem is, I'm obviously out of shape... And the tournament is in about a month.

So I've got about a month to get back into go shape. That means playing some more games.

Here's a game I played just now on OGS:

The time settings were kind of quick, but you can see the rough review I gave above, in the SGF file. I haven't checked AI, yet.

Some things that stick out to me as wrong:

The marked move above protects my shape, but it seems like it's gotta be wrong. Maybe the original choice of B15 was wrong to begin with. Nonetheless, this double tiger's mouth can't be good, given the peep that white can do.

Ultimately, I want to attack the marked white stones. But a high move like this invites the white move I played in the game. Maybe I should play low?

I overplayed here without reading much. I think I should have just given things a bit more thought.

So overall:
1. Time settings were pretty quick - maybe I should go for a slower game, next time, since I am out of shape.

2. I didn't think of my own weaknesses, enough.

Now I'll briefly check the AI.

The marked move above is the initial instinct. I remember this move, now. I totally forgot about that, and I've played this way before. Somehow, C16 didn't cross my mind!

Given that, the AI points out:

If I wedge like this, it's the same as if we play the "normal" way starting with C16, but then white makes the B16 play on the second line. My tiger's mouth move, which I played in the game, resulted in a 12% loss!

Says I lost something like 18% there. I thought this was a shape move.

Instead, seems that the AI wants to build up a position in the center with black, and then move on to invade.

Another big point was to respond here:

Regarding this move, I feel it's fairly important. A white move there would strengthen white more than black's move does, and is probably sente to boot.

My only other thought is that I don't like black's moving out with the stones in the lower left at all. White is alive on one side, and the other side is much stronger than black's cutting stone. I think it would be better to leave it as aji, since it's already done its work in setting up the trade.

Edited the diagram for clarity.

I think white played somewhat loose shapes up to :w38:, maybe 1-2 more tight moves would be more balanced.

I don't see any problem with :w34:. I think if black starts to surround this stone it will be efficient and white will regret not playing something. Other moves are possible instead of running out the stone but :b37: seems slow.

Overall it looks to me that black's errors in the opening and first part of the middle game are more obvious than white's. Maybe it helped white handle the middle game that black was a behind or at least slow in the fight. For example how white could temporarily abandon K3.

:b45:, :b53:, :b61:, :b79: look bad to me. Black also didn't try to exploit the looseness in white's early position. For example black could fight something like this, white has some groups that can be separated.

Trying to keep up with playing games, so I fired up the ol' VM, and started up Tygem. I haven't played on Tygem in ages - my last game is from July 2019. I'm 4d there, so I played a game.

Here it is:

Looking at the very big picture, of course, I was too aggressive and tried to kill his group... And died. Somehow, I was redeemed near the end when he messed up a capturing race.

Whether or not this move works, I did not read out the obvious danger of his counter attack. His moves weren't that surprising, but just a few moves later, I was feeling like I was in trouble. It means I didn't think about it much.

Actually, I'm going to stop there for my own highlights... I think the moral here is: look twice before crossing the road. I need to take attacks seriously, and consider my weaknesses before I switch on an attack.

Looked at the game with an AI.

Some points..

Here, AI wants to just descend, and says I lost a lot by my choice:

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . X O . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . X X O O . . |

$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
$$ ---------------------------------------[/go]

Furthermore, after white lives in the top right, AI is more interested in the top left corner... Doesn't really care about attacking the black group immediately. I suppose the takeaway is that it's valuable to keep black weak like that, even if there's not an immediate attack.

I wonder if I can tie the two learnings together:
* Instead of going ALL OUT for an attack, it's good enough to put out reasonable force.
* This may be necessary in times where I am weak.

I think that may be too rigid a learning, especially the first point.

The problem is that sometimes you do need to go ALL OUT - the position demands it. Sometimes it won't be enough to hold back with 'reasonable force'.

I agree with you, but I think I am a bit blind to my own weaknesses in a given position, so that makes part needs extra attention.
