The marked point is big, but given all the aji, I think it's worth it to respond to black's push:

There's concern that the bottom group will be attacked, but I think it's a good chunk of territory on the right. I got into a lot of problems since I ignored.

It was painful to play the marked move, above, so I played this bad shape move. Of course, it came back to bite me. I should endure:

I rarely study pro games.

But, why not?

Here's a review with some first impressions I had of one of the master games:

This is an interesting result. White's follow-up at the marked move was interesting, too.

From my sloppy analysis, it looks like white gets a slightly smaller corner compared to the joseki I'm used to, but black doesn't get any ko funny business, and white can put a bit of pressure on black. White also gets more points on the right side.

Maybe I should try to play this way in my next game - or at least the next one where I have the chance to get pincered with the two space high pincer against 3-4 approach...

I'm thinking only:
1.) Direct responses to white's threat.
2.) Can I live if I ignore?
3.) I don't think about the effect of capturing the ko and creating a nice shape on the right.

Granted, white got strong in the middle. But I still like black's way of thinking.

The marked white move above is very fascinating to me. Namely, I only thought of it as corner territory when I first looked at it. But it is almost sente to create a great attack against black's marked stones.

I think I think of the game too directly. I'd think with only a single goal:
1.) Corner territory? Yes? No?
2.) Attack stones? Yes? No?
3.) Reduce left? Yes? No?

Clearly, Master's plan is more strategic: Get corner territory + threat potential attack, or if he defends, then take sente. Something like that?

I'm surprised about black's choice of doing 3-3 instead of doing something on the left. I might value the left too much. It could also be that black feels the need to catch up on points. Or it could be both.

Overall, what are my takeaways?

1.) I'd like to try white's choice of joseki for the top right.
2.) I should be less direct and simplistic in plans I make for my own games.
3.) I might value moyo-type shapes too much.

That's it for tonight. My noob analysis of a pro game.

From my much sloppier analysis, when black gets influence in exchange for territory, white (master) likes to loosely toss a few stones 4 or 5 stones away from that influence rendering it less effective, and in some cases even managing to threaten it. This is something I would like to try in my next game. :)

Kirby, one reason for approach of 8 before pincering at top right (as well as develop left side) is to create a more powerful ladder breaker at e4 if white does the popular joseki you showed.

I and others analysed that game too in viewtopic.php?f=15&t=13929, including my relay of comments from Kim Jiseok himself from his BIBA lecture on the game.

@daal: Thanks, that makes sense. The stones seem thin, but master makes it work, doesn't he/she/it?

@Uberdude: Thanks for the link. I'll take a look. I knew you had a thread reviewing master games, but I wanted to take a first look with an unbiased opinion of the game.

I think my move above is probably wrong, but I don't know what's better. I guess I can't expect a nice result in a handicap game this early.

Another day, another two more games.

Somehow, KGS rated me as 2d again after beating 6k at 6 stones. So I did automatch, and played against 3d as black.

Incidentally, things went exactly according to how I studied from one of Inseong's videos, until I got to a position that was "good for black". But then, I was confused about how to proceed. Though I remembered the line to get to the "good" variation, I had never thought about how to continue.

So I thought for awhile, my opponent got angry, and then he escaped. It turned into a forfeit, since he's a chronic escaper, I guess.

Anyway, I thought about the follow up. Best I can think of is approaching the top left corner. What do you think?

Maybe it's because I don't have Inseong to hold my hand, anymore... I reached the end of the variation that was "good for black", and didn't know how to continue.

So given the short nature of this game, the only question I'm left with is how to play next as black:

And here's game 2 from today, since the first one ended so quickly.

I played with 5 stone handicap against 4k. I realize I overplayed and shouldn't have killed him on top.

Next time I should be more careful.

Here's the position:

I think it will cause problems for me.

I think it's early in the game to have an advantage with 5 stones, so I should have been more patient. Just let him crawl on the 2nd line, then get sente to play another big point.

if instead of 2 in your last diagram, white sacrifices 5 stones (since they arent going anywhere anyway), using them for a kind of mini-driving tesuji, playing 2 at J14, then after black captures, making shape with G15,... mmm, oh,,,E18 only has 5 liberties... is there a 2-stone edge squeeze at M18? is there?! i haven't tried it out with stones on the board, just guessing.

black's stones at the top just look wrong, but given that i've lost aleph-nought semeais, i'm not one to say with any authority

PS gosh, darn it, no wonder i always lose - the sacrifice is a sacrifice of key cutting stones giving black all the liberties in the world! there's no squeeze... hallucination city, my favourite way of playing Go.. ok, i'll shut up now.

My favorite time setting is 30 minutes + 5 periods of 30 seconds byo-yomi. That's what I like to play with, but if nobody challenges me on KGS, I'll just use automatch.

But today, I saw that 'TheCaptain' had an offer up!
Image

His time settings were pretty quick (Canadian time, 1 minute + 25 stones/6 minutes), so I normally wouldn't challenge someone under those conditions. I have a hard time thinking that fast :-) But I've always dreamed of playing 'TheCaptain' someday. When I joined KGS, I remember watching his games, amazed at this legend of go.

So time settings fast or slow, win or lose, I wanted to play 'TheCaptain' at least once in my life.

So I did.

And as luck may have it, I ran out of time. I think he had a pretty good position when I lost, but there are still a few good things I can learn from this game.

Here it is:

I feel bad about losing, but I'm happy to be someone that's played 'TheCaptain'. I can live the rest of my life in peace, now.

I think the marked move, above, is questionable. It's my "go-to" move for white's pincer, but in this scenario, since I've invested in the left, it may make sense to give white a little on the bottom to put pressure on the single white stone:

White's move, above, is interesting. I thought it was slow, personally, but now I realize that it may have been in preparation for white's move :w4: here:

Basically, white has a goal of helping the marked stone. He doesn't pull out immediately, but creates a weakness in the top left. After I tenuki, he exploits that weakness to help his stone.

It's a very interesting concept that I should try to learn from.

I think the move above is the "losing move" (outside of running out of time).

I think it's perfectly fine to let white crawl on the second line:

I have one weakish group in the center, but it's not that weak. White doesn't have much territory, and I have initiative in both of the corners on the right.

I think that black has a very reasonable position.

Trying too hard to push and pressure white backfired.

Some general points to learn from this game:

  1. Let up a little bit on the pressure when the position can be reasonable for me.
  2. Consider alternatives to joseki I play by habit. In this case, maybe pressuring the left stone more would have been better.
  3. Learn from 'TheCaptain': When I have a goal to accomplish, think about solving it indirectly - create a weakness in the opponent's shape first, then exploit it (for example).

I think that's what I should focus on for now.

Nonetheless, I was honored to play a legend today :-)

Hi Kirby,

This is good.

Mr. Ishida said in his introduction to the basic joseki dictionary ( paraphrasing ) that it is his "belief there are no joseki for the 4-4 star point ); this was written 40 years before AlphaGo, and we may be coming full circle.

( IMO 'digesting' a joseki involves eventually forgetting the joseki. :) )

Please see also ( 04:05 ~ 05:50 ): :)

Reading this, How Not to Play Chess by Znosko-Borovsky came to mind.

Do not make the opening moves automatically and without reflection.

Do not be content with attacking an existing weakness; always seek to create others.

Hi, Ed!

Thanks for the Fujizawa Hideyuki clip. Maybe I should take up smoking and drinking. ;)
