Hello,

My son (14 yrs old) loves strategy games and he and I have played a thousand chess games. I had never played go but thought it would appeal to him. so for christmas I got him a set and he has been kicking my butt almost daily. so hopefully with the help of this site I can crush him like a bug :D

thanks

Ray

Good luck getting ahead, you've got your work cut out for you.

If you want to pull ahead, it might end up feeling a bit like getting an extra job though.

The question is, just how badly do you want to pull ahead?

Welcome!

Go is a great game. You're lucky to get to play it with someone you love.

Well, we all strongly disagree with each other what the perfect method is, but you should at least be playing games with lots of different opponents (probably online), and do some tsumego (the equivalent of endgame problems in chess) too. If you're just starting out, probably the part to focus on is getting one or two hundred games behind you ASAP.

If you have a lot of small, otherwise useless moments of spare time during the day, tsumego can fit in there quite well.

If there's a local go club, you could see about meeting them, too. http://www.usgo.org/where-play-go

Hi Ray, if you could post your games with him here, then both of you can learn from the reviews. :)
