Good evening, all.

If you're reading this, you're known to the Australian Go Association as a tournament player, or you're in one of the many go mailing lists around the country, or we think you might be interested. :) This will be posted out at regular intervals, please forward it to anyone who wants to know about Australian go and repost at will.

NEXT FIRST CLASS TOURNAMENTS - http://www.australiango.asn.au/Events.php

10th Korean Ambassador's Cup, Sunday 17th August, Sydney, New South Wales
1st Sydney Spring Tournament, Sunday 19th October, Surry Hills, New South Wales
4th Gold Coast Classic, Sunday 26th October, Helensvale, Queensland
37th Australian Championships, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December, Sydney City Go Club, Surry Hills (Sydney), New South Wales
1st Australian Go Congress, Monday 26th to Saturday 31st January, 2015, Macquarie University (Sydney), New South Wales
35th Queensland Championships, Saturday 28th February to Sunday 1st March, University of Queensland (Brisbane), Queensland

The Australian Go Association is pleased to announce that the Sydney Spring Tournament and the Australian Go Congress main and lightning tournaments have both been endorsed for international selection: if you play in them, you get selection points towards qualification for the Australian teams at the various world championships. Meanwhile, the Go Congress effort continues to gather pace: if you are interested in playing, or in volunteering to help, or both, contact An Younggil or join the mailing list at http://congress.go.org.au/.

The Australian Capital Territory Championships on the weekend of 26th July were fought to a conclusion, but sparsely attended compared to previous years. The one-day rapid KAC is this weekend.

ONLINE

The Australian room on the Online Go Server - http://online-go.com/group/261 - continues to grow, with 33 members, and regular playing sessions on Tuesday evenings AEST. OGS supports regular online go (like KGS) and also correspondence go (for the time-challenged).
The Australian Go Ladder now has five competitors on it. I continue to dominate. Seriously? Not one dan player will challenge us? Join the ladder from the OGS Australia Room group.
The Australia Room on the KGS Go Server is also going strong - if you'd like to organise online events there, talk to Matthew Crossman (matjet) the room administrator.
There is an Australian Go Association board on the famous Life In 19x19 go forum. If you want to discuss Australian go (or bag the AGA) this is the place to do it, and people from the AGA reads the forum regularly.
Quote from the after-action report: "The Sydney - Gold Coast friendship games held a couple of weeks ago were a great success. The games were reviewed at the time and An Younggil kindly added further comments. Another round of friendship games will be held in September, so if you are interested please contact Yoko Usami or me (David Mitchell)." In June, that was three Queenslanders vs three New South Welsh. Are you in NSW? Talk to David and join in. Queensland? Talk to Yoko. Another state wants to join in? The more the merrier. (cough*WesternAustralia*cough) Kickoff for the next round is at Sunday 14 September, 3pm AEST. All ranks welcome. If you can play the game at all, we can find you someone to play with.
The australian-players email list ([AusGo]) is moderated, but seriously, if you have a national announcement (i.e. tournament), you are allowed to post it there. It's not just me and Younggil.

CLUBS - http://www.australiango.asn.au/Clubs.php

Tasmania Go Club still meets at Chado's, apparently. If you play there, or can fill in some more recent history, give us a coo-eee.
Adelaide Go Club has been meeting for some months now over a sausage sizzle at David Evans' place in Myrtle Bank, first Saturday of most months. It's going well. If you'd like to join in and get on the Adelaide mailing list, follow the link, contact Alexander Hanysz. Especially if you'd like to volunteer to host some of the sausage sizzles and take some of the load off of David.
The Brisbane Go Club has federated with the Gold Coast Go Club to form the Queensland Go Society. The new general secretary of the society is Mark Bell 3d, known for many decades in the community. The chapter convenors are Erli Qiu (president, Gold Coast Go Club, meets last Sunday of the month at Helensvale) and Horatio Davis (secretary, Brisbane Go Club, meets every Tuesday evening at the Go Lounge, Greenslopes). If there's a group of you play go somewhere in Queensland, more chapters are welcome to join us and have a voice in how Queensland go is run. University games societies especially welcome.
Melbourne City Go Club seems to have gone on hiatus. Can anyone in Victoria comment?

INTERNATIONAL

Learn Go Week is spawning events all over the world: Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney, France, England, United States, Mexico. If you're in an Australian city, follow the links, have a crack at an event of your own, on or around September 13, 2014; it's as simple as lolling around at your favourite cafe with a go board and a willingness to teach. If you're not in Australia, that goes extra for you. Double style points if your club is on a continent not already represented (India, Africa, Asia, South America, Antarctica).
Fresh off the wire from our Sydney correspondent, Andrew Fischhof: "Congratulations to our Australian contingent (both from Queensland :^) at the European Go Congress 2014. In the 10 round Open Tournament Markus Pache (1d) finished with 5 wins and a final McMahon score of 25 to place 180th (out of 458) while the young Yanis Newman-Pache (2k) also finished with 5 wins to achieve a McMahon score of 23 to place equal 249th with Ning Zhu of China (2d) - although on the final scoreboard for some reason they were made honorary Germans!" To be fair, they're both from the Gold Coast Go Club. Their crushing dominance at the Queensland Open in recent years is surely pure coincidence. :)
Neville Smythe, vice-president Australian Go Association: "In Korea I had a discussion with Mr Ying of the Ing Go Foundation. He would like to see some Australian university students (up to 4 possibly) at the 2015 International Collegiate Go Tournament, to be held in Taiwan. The tournament is open to any University students of any playing strength; expenses in Taiwan will be met by the organisers. This will be the 3rd time the event is staged, the first two were held in Shanghai and Hong Kong. If anyone is interested (including students who will be enrolling in a university course next year) should contact me." That's *the* Neville Smythe of the Canberra Go Club.
The 8th Kim-In Cup International Senior Baduk Competition has invited Australia to send competitors to the men's team event (over 50), women's team event (over 30) and individual tournaments in GangJin City, South Korea, November 7-10 2014. Contact secretary@australiango.asn.au if you're interested.

....and that's all the news that's fit to print. If you have some, share by return email.

Cheers,

Horatio

Thanks Horatio. Fantastic newsletter. Looking forward to the next one.

The link provided for the Australian Congress doesn't seem to work. The one I have is: http://ozgocongress.com
