Good evening, all.

If you're reading this, you're known to the Australian Go Association as a tournament player, or you're in one of the many go mailing lists around the country, or we think you might be interested. :) This will be posted out at regular intervals, please forward it to anyone who wants to know about Australian go and repost at will.

NEXT FIRST CLASS TOURNAMENTS - http://www.australiango.asn.au/Events.php

2014 New Zealand Open, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October, Auckland, New Zealand.
1st Sydney Spring Tournament, Sunday 19th October, Surry Hills, New South Wales
4th Gold Coast Classic, Sunday 26th October, Helensvale, Queensland
37th Australian Championships, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December, Sydney City Go Club, Surry Hills (Sydney), New South Wales
35th Queensland Championships, Saturday 28th February to Sunday 1st March, University of Queensland (Brisbane), Queensland

The Australian tournaments all attract selection points towards qualification for the Australian teams at the various world championships (see below). We aren't just interested in these first-class tournaments; we want to know about all the other tournaments your club runs, and any serious online events. The more information we have, the more precise a rating can be computed. For example, at the moment, updates to the points tables and rankings on the AGA web pages are waiting on incorporating the Golden Aussie results from Melbourne and the Queensland Open results from Brisbane.

The 2014 Australian Capital Territory champion (Canberra, 26 July) is Li Zhiwei 5d, heading a select cohort of players with John Chen 3d in second place and Rhys Davies 2d in third.
The 2014 Korean Ambassador's Cup champion (Sydney, Sunday 17 August) is Wei Zhou 7d, closely followed by Guyu Liu 7d then Weijiang Chen 6d. Division B champions were Shengfang Zhou 4d and Ming Xu 3d, in a dead heat, and Division 3 (kyu) was won by Florian Max 5k. I sense a promotion in Florian's future. 47 competitors, all told.
The 2014 Auckland Open champions are Ken Xie and Doyoung Kim, in a dead heat at four wins each, with Juhau Zhou and David Wu on equal third.

ONLINE

The Australian room on the Online Go Server - http://online-go.com/group/261 - now has 39 members from 22k (silvia.loveza, Western Australia) to 6d (jackguo, Sydney). This server supports regular online go (like KGS) and also correspondence go (for the time-challenged). Join usssss....
The Australian Go Ladder has seven members - second place is Mr Newby (5k) and tzorec (12k), who are in a race to see who takes down the leader.
The Australia Room on the KGS Go Server is also going strong - if you'd like to organise online events there, talk to Matthew Crossman (matjet) the room administrator.
There is an Australian Go Association board on the famous Life In 19x19 go forum. If you want to discuss Australian go (or bag the AGA) this is the place to do it, and people from the AGA reads the forum regularly.
The Queensland vs New South Wales friendly games are back, this time with 6 players from all over New South Wales going up against a mixed bag of Queenslanders, from fifth dan to ninth kyu. Kickoff for the next round is at Sunday 14 September, 3pm AEST. All ranks welcome, but registration is closed for this round; talk to David or Yoko on Facebook or at their clubs to join in the next round. If you can play the game at all, we can find you someone to play with.
The australian-players@lists.australiango.asn.au email list ([AusGo]) is for announcements to Australian go players. Post anything you think might be interesting - it's moderated to filter out the spam.
The @australiango twitter account has risen from the dead for #LearnGoWeek. Follow it for more real-time news than this monthly newsletter. :)
