Ok, let's have a fun new tournament with a new format. I'll sign up, despite having no time for it, because it sounds fun - and fun Go is Go I actually end up with the motivation to play, which hopefully helps me get better or something.

I'm going to pick the game controls that the last one had, because everyone seemed happy enough with that. If there are objections and suggestions to change, please add them to thread - if enough people suggest something else, we can vote on it:

Ruleset - AGA attracted a few positive comments, and may as well be the default. Others are fine if agreed by both players.
Main Time - 40 minutes.
Overtime - Either 10 stones in 5 minutes Canadian overtime or 5 x 0:40 Japanese Byo-yomi is fine. If there is a disagreement between players, the Canadian overtime is the over-riding default.
Handicaps - All games to be played at handicap-2 (so 3k vs 7k is at 2 stones), komi is 7 if even, 0 if no komi or handicap.

Tournament format

Initially I'll do seeded group stages, with each seed group randomly distributed. I don't know what size groups we are likely to have, but probably around 6 if I can manage it. Each group I was envisaging would be a single round robin, with games to be completed within a single calendar month - probably May, but it depends on whether we get plenty of people signed up, we could always start mid-April and give a month and a half for games.

At the end of the first group stage, I was envisaging a second stage, and if we wanted the top two players in the top group in the second stage could play a best of 3 for the "hahn-title" or something. An example would be 24 people signing up, being split into 4 groups of 6 players. Top 2 go into a top group of 8, next to go into a middle group of 8, and bottom 2 into a bottom group of 8 (so we can rank 1st - 24th if that appeals).

I'm very happy with only the top two progressing, but I thought it might be a positive thing to allow all the players to play plenty of games - in this case, there would be 13 games per player spread over 2 months.

Scoring system

Hahn - 50 points for jigo. 60-40 for 1-9 point win. 70-30 for 10-19 point win. 80-20 for 20-29 point win. 90-10 for 30-39 point win. 100-0 for 40+ point win or resignation.
Simplified - 50 points for jigo. +1 point to the winner (and -1 to the loser) for each point, with 50+ points being 100-0
Herman - 5 points for jigo. log scale, so 1 point win = 6-4, 3 points = 7-3, 7 points = 8-2, 15 points = 9-1, and 31+ points = 10-0. These aren't thresholds, and I'll track fractional points to 2 DP.

The advantage of the Herman system is that the closer the game is, the more important each point is. The downside is that the less close the game is, the less the points matter when the game isn't close. Six of one, half a dozen of the other :)

Signing up - Please read!!

So, for signing up, can people please entering rank, preferred server, preferred scoring system, and whether you'd prefer a second group stage regardless of finishing position, or just for the top players in each group (additional weight will be given to the choices of kyu players here, for obvious reasons). Also, preferred existence of a title match at the end.

To start the ball rolling:

Just a half-serious suggestion from the peanut gallery: In the spirit of the number of points of victory counting...the title match could (should?) be an even number of games.

Ooh, for some reason I'd thought that these would just be counted as wins, but yeah, using the same scoring system makes sense. Perhaps 4 games to alleviate the impact of a one bad resignation or something? I was thinking the Hahn system doesn't work so well for 1 vs 1, but I don't see why that should be the case - it could make for some interesting strategic decisions (blast the first two to get wins by resignation, then stubbornly prevent your opponent from winning big in the other two).

Actually for the title the Hahn system is irrelevant.

EDIT: What topazg said is true, but I don't see the need to extend it.

Not Herman scoring (either of the other two is fine, but I want every point of victory to be worth a similar amount. Herman's system is too close to regular go for my taste)
Second stage for all players
Title match for top two, even # of games.

overtime - I'm pretty used to the byo-yomi Japanese time set.
the Hahn system sounds good to me.
title match - best of 3 from top performing players sounds good.

We currently have 10 players, I'm hoping for 24 to give this a good test run and see how it works - am I being too optimistic?

Overtime - Comfortable with either.
Don't care which of the scoring sets we use, as long as I only have to report the result, and someone else does the calculation.
Second round for all, yes please.

I'll bite.
KGS
Herman scoring
I can lose on time under any timing system so no preference there.
However, I am not a 6d on KGS. Some years ago I was mainly a 3d (we Jp's are notoriously over ranked ;-) ), so 3 or 4d should do.

Ok, I'll add as a 3d - It will make a difference because of the handicapping system :)

Ok, we need 10 more players (or 8 if SiNK and Stable confirm)
