Hi,

I prefer the dubbed versions, because I don't understand Japanese. I'd much rather hear it in my own language. And the dialog is much richer than what the subtitles can provide which are often abbreviated, shorted, or even skipped portions. Not to mention that having to read the subtitles distracts from watching the action on the screen and visa versa.

I would feel differently if I were trying to learn Japanese.

Often true, but in this case the subtitles are really well done. Very little is lost and much of the nuance is there.
Cheers,

I have the DVDs and have watched them all with and without subtitles, in Japanese and in English -- I disagree.

the official subbed videos are much better than the fan subbed ones, but they still are not complete dialog (subtitles are never intended to be)

In Germany everything is dubbed, and it's horrific, universally. Everything is sh*t. They have this machine which takes normal movies, digests them, squats over a bunch of newspapers and then squeezes out a steaming pile of German dubbed movies.

I totally agree that subtitles are a crutch, but dubbing is so much worse.
But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Maybe, but you can't really say that dubs are able to fully capture the essence of the original Japanese in all cases.

true, but since I can't understand the Japanese, it doesn't matter. I'm only comparing the dub vs the sub. And there's an obvious difference.

Well I do understand Japanese and allowing for the obvious that subs don`t get everything in they are a very good representation of much of what is said. If you don`t understand Japanese then you can`t have much perspective on that.

In the OP, I posted a link that's now expired. For folks that missed it, here's another link:

I'm revisiting this post, because after looking up for someone on FB, I found this video of one of the other openings:

Then down the rabbit hole further:

Just decided to revive this thread, because I'm having too much fun tonight.

Awesome, Kirby, thanks!

Kids with video cameras, wigs, and time: dangerous combination.

I find it's a bit of a pity that there has been no revival, now and then. It would have to be a sporadic one, obviously, but... I think it's a lost chance. The generation that watched HnG as shonen are now winning the Big... Five? Seven? Rurouni Kenshin came just before and has been having OVAs, revivals and such ever since, even though the author got busted and fined for possession of underage porn. Compare with the recent tribble-ations of Yoda Norimoto.

I do think we're missing some sort of continuation. The Chinese animation I saw some time ago didn't quite gel. And Hoshizora no Karasu... Close, but no cigar.

Bamboo Blade, Bushido 16... Manga, anime and real life.

Now, I realize Go is a minority art. Even NHK's Japanology has a many episodes on different ways of martial arts or blade crafting, a full episode on Shogi... and a 5-minute short by the support cast on Go. But I do think not doing a mere OVA or net animation since is a missed opportunity, possibly a mistake.

Take care.
