My new kaya cutting board from Japan.
Size: 487mm X 257mm X 55mm
I love the smell of kaya.
I think this is probably Chinese kaya, but still a wonderful piece of wood.

Nice looking cutting board! Actually there are many utilitarian things made from kaya wood. When a kaya tree is harvested only certain parts of the tree can be used for making the beautiful boards we all admire. There is a lot of wood left that can't be used for go boards. This left over wood is used to make cutting boards, platters, picture frames, saucers, trays, boxes, etc. These various items are not as expensive as go boards but still beautiful and pleasant to use.

I won it at a Japanese online auction. It was the biggest kaya cutting board I have come upon. It's not perfect as it has a slight crack at one of the bottom edge and some slight imperfection at the bottom but it was still quite attractive to me.

If you work with a Japanese buying agent, I have found another place which sells kaya cutting boards as well but they are smaller sized. That brand seems to be available on Rakuten as well but seems to be through a reseller at a slightly higher price. I found it as I was doing research on how to buy one of these beauties.

The photos of the sample boards sure look beautiful with straight lines much like gobans, but I wonder if the board you order from this company actually will come with such a pattern. I would guess that it wouldn't be such a pattern, but nevertheless still a beauty. In the end, I wouldn't know because I have never ordered from this company before. So good luck and if you do get one, please post pix and let us know :)
