The title assumes that Go is your favorite board game which is likely if you're on this forum. So what other games do you like? The question is not limited to abstract strategy games. My obvious favorite is Chess, however, after that I would have to choose Axis and Allies or Stratego but that's a tough choice.

The only other games I play with any regularity are Poker and Settlers of Catan. And since Poker is not a board game I guess we have our answer. A friend of mine dragged me into Settlers, and I don't even own the game. I only play at his place, but sometimes as much as 3 times a week. We pick and choose which rules to follow from the expansions and it ends up a lot of fun.

Funny thing about settlers: there's no inherent idea of combat within the game yet every time I play, my settlements get "killed". By this I mean that I get hemmed in such that I don't have room to build enough roads to win.

I'm currently even playing more backgammon than go (lack of time for real, good, playing time). I like that it is a faster game (5-game matches can be played turn-based in just 3-4 days if both players play relatively often) and that playing against the machine actually teaches you good habits, not bad habits. Also, since computers are incredibly strong analysing past games is really easy.

There aren't many board games I play a lot. Scrabble is good.

My brother is a board game fanatic, and at his house I have enjoyed Last Night on Earth and Small World.

At this point, Shogi. It's far behind Go in the time I spend on it though.

Go is the only board game I play :(. Next favorite game after Go would be Hearthstone.

Is Japanese Chess another name for Shogi or are they different? I kinda' think of card games as board games (table-top game may be more fitting).

Shogi is often called Japanese Chess. Xiangqi is called Chinese Chess.

Advanced Civilization ("original" AH version, not the computer game series). Takes quite a while for a full game but loads of fun.

Same here. I've tried others over the years, but Go is the only one that's held my attention. Same with video games and card games -- brief flirtations, but they never became a 'habit' the way Go has.

Hard for me to say, but with the news about John Nash, I wanted to say that Hex, which he independently rediscovered, is high on my list. Probably my favorite is Havannah, which draws on the Hex mechanic.

I've never actually played Hex. Is it fun?
