I play poker regularly against a friend, we play for fun, not real money.

Lately we've stopped playing, though 'cause it's getting boring.

Would you happen to know any interesting card games for two people?

I can't tell what card games you would find interesting. But there are plenty of them normally played by two.

There are strong regional preferences. Before I moved up here to New England, never saw cribbage played (or pitch, but that's for more than two).

There are games of the pinocle family for two (say belotte). Which you might see again regional.

Casino is widely played. So is gin rummy (and other games of the rummy family have versions for two)

Two can play crazy eights (and that can be deadly more serious than a kids game)

Gin Rummy!

If you want more games, here are two websites with rules for many card games for two players:

Open Face Chinese Poker (of course, even that is more fun with real money, but contrary to "real" poker, it is quite interesting even without money)

Canasta (and I guess all similar games)

Haggis was initially designed to be played with a regular deck of cards. It can be played with a regular deck with 2 players, which is how I think it is best.

I like Sheepshead - I believe there are some variations for two players.

Another vote for 6-card cribbage. Very nice game.

Gin rummy is also definitely one to play.

The best 2-player card game I ever played? A competitive patience game which is little-known called Russian Bank. I used to play it against an 85-year-old lady called Mrs. Tongue, who liked to play in the mornings after having her gin and water.

I have almost no memory of playing a lot of skat.

But that's a 3-player game.

Doppelkopf is a 4 player game that is quite popular in parts of Germany, and is quite fun as you don't always know who your partner is... :o

edit: oops, missed that about 2 players. I guess I'd also suggest cribbage ... or to heck with cards, play go! :)

Heads-up poker is not all that fun, even with real money.

Two player card games these are really good:

Gin Rummy,
Cassino,
Piquet

I'm sure hearts could also be played with 2 players?

aka "Honeymoon Hearts" Pinockle also has a couple two player variants, one conceptually sort of like honeymoon hearts and one very different. But the pinockle family games intended for two would be better.

I played Hanabi (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/98778/hanabi) with a friend, and it seemed quite interesting. It is cooperative, not competitive, and either requires a special deck or two decks of regular cards + some complexity.

My wife and I are big Tichu fans, so when I looked up Haggis and saw that it was a Tichu-like game for 2 players, I had to give it a try. We have only played one game so far but really enjoyed it, so thanks for the tip!
