Recently I started my 30th year. It takes me at least two days to get over a hangover.

I am 59.95748 and this year I'm going to celebrate twice: a "not-yet-60-years-old-day" at a nice Biergarten in Munich and a more pensive birthday at a gemütliches restaurant in Leipzig.

Totally forgot to update here … see how my memory is fading :-D

Turned 60 the day before Summer Solstice.

And on the Solstice night I went for a midnight walk in the woods with a dear friend … suddenly I saw two light spots move around us … first I thought I my eyes were betraying me, but suddenly there were thousands of fireflies around us … even though I know about bioluminescence, Luciferin, Luciferase, etc., it was a totally magical moment, we thought we were in a fairy tale :-) these ones (sorry, it’s the German Wikipedia article, no English one for this species).

Yep, fireflies - they came in through the open balcony door yesterday evening. The lights were off and these "Glühwürmchen" made little arcs of greenish light that fluttered back and forth very quickly. Very spooky but fascinating!

What advice do older folks have for younger members? I'm 34, so I wouldn't say I classify as young, but also not old enough to give good advice...

In three hours I’ll be 50 years old.

I’ve started Go very late - at the age of 36 - and, having a job, there wasn’t that much time or mental energy to really become strong. For decades now I’ve “made a living” and built up savings and I’m aware that fewer days lie ahead of me than behind me. I haven’t even started to find out how far I can get and feel it’s high time to concentrate on Go more deeply.

Thanks, Marcel. Do you have any advice for your 36-year-old self?

Good advice - I particularly like the bit about not spending time on things that don't matter. Now I just have to figure out what matters

Pretty much the same advice that I’d give myself today - but it’s not so easy to follow, not then and not now.

Don’t waste time and money on things that don’t really matter. But you have to think deeply to find out what the things that matter actually are. For me, expensive holidays, computers, restaurants etc. are not it. To break out of the consumption spiral, it helps to want those things that you already have.

Don’t live other people’s lives. They will often give you seemingly well-intended advice that will keep you in the mainstream and discourage you from doing what they themselves weren’t able to do. In the end you’re on your own. So live in a way that you can be happy with looking back in a few decades.

Stay away from toxic people. There are people who can inspire you and lift you up, and there are people who subtly put you down.

If you avoid those three mistakes it’s already a pretty good life.

Fourth: Avoid people who don't like cats.

Oh, that’s really not easy, as I have found out: what matters can change a LOT over time.

No, experience matters.
But it looks like you have a good start. We look forward to welcoming you to the grumpy old man club in another 28 years. :)

My grandson Yuri will be a week old tomorrow. They kicked him out if the hospital today and he came for a visit. He isn't much for rattling the stones in the bowl yet but I thought I would get him started on the basics. Unfortunately these new AI joseki didn't hold his attention for very long. :blackeye:
