Seattle Go Center is pleased to announce educational offerings beginning (or resuming after holiday hiatus) in January 2019. There's something appropriate for nearly everyone, beginner to 6d. Most classes are free of charge (though Go Center membership policies apply -- see below*); and tuition assistance is available for the Advanced Go class.

Mon. (1-14) -- Double Digit Kyu -- 6:30-8:30 PM
Wed. (1-16) -- Programming Computer Go -- 6:00-7:00 PM
Wed. (1-16) -- Go Basics -- 7:00-8:30 PM
Thu. (ongoing) -- Complete Beginners -- 6:30-8:30 PM
Thu. (1-17) -- Advanced Go -- 7:00-9:00 PM

Mondays -- Nick Sibicky's highly popular Double Digit Kyu lectures resume on Jan. 14 (then skip Jan. 21 for the Martin Luther King holiday, and re-resume Jan. 28). These are aimed at players approximately 20k to 5k, and they're usually recorded for Nick's YouTube channel.
6:30-8:30 PM Mondays. Tuition: Free!*

Wednesdays -- New this year, starting Jan. 16, Programming Computer Go in Python follows along with Deep Learning and the Game of Go (available at https://www.manning.com/books/deep-learning-and-the-game-of-go). Led by professional programmers Eric Downes and Drew Barnett, this series of lecture / study / work (bring your laptop!) sessions is good for people who, in the words of Eric, "have two out of the four following: some programming experience; some Go playing experience; interest in machine learning; desire to prep for the coming AI War."
6:00-7:00 PM Wednesdays. Tuition: Free!*

Wednesdays -- Also starting Jan. 16, after the PCG session, be sure to attend Drew Barnett's Go Basics lectures. Starting from the absolute fundamentals of capturing, cutting, and connecting, over several weeks Drew builds toward a single-digit kyu grasp of Go tactics and strategies. This is a good choice for players who know the rules and not much else, and I expect it will complement the Programming sessions for folks who know more about programming than they do about playing Go (but to be honest, as an AGA 5k, I found Drew's lectures quite useful when he did them last summer at the Go Center).
7:00-8:30 PM Wednesdays. Tuition: Free!*

Thursdays -- Larry Eclipse's ongoing informal Complete Beginners class resumes today (Jan. 3), after a holiday break. It is a gentle intro to Go for those who've never played before. Larry covers the rules, capturing, living shapes, and counting the score, and gets you playing Go on a 9x9 board.
6:30-8:30 PM Thursdays (just walk in any time after 6:30). Tuition: Free!*

Thursdays -- Starting Jan. 17, Zhang Yue's Advanced Go classes are a good fit for players from 9k to 6d in strength. Yue uses a novel approach incorporating lecture, live play, and AI-augmented review personalized for the students' levels. Currently rated 7.7 in the AGA, Yue's experience includes winning the 2016 Seattle Anniversary Open and the 2018 Spring Open. Yue holds a PhD in paleontology from Ohio State University, and he has extensive teaching experience.
7:00-9:00 Thursdays. Tuition: $25 per session (includes Go Center admission); or $20 per session for Youth (17 and younger); or $20 per session for Go Center Quarterly, Yearly, or Lifetime members. If you want to up your game but the tuition is a barrier for you, please contact me about a partial scholarship ($10 toward the cost of each session).

* The "free" classes have no tuition due, and Seattle Go Center membership admission policies apply: First ten visits free (youth 17 and younger always free); and after that, there are membership options for every budget.
    $5 for a one-day visit;
    · $35 for a ten-visits punchcard ($25 with student ID);
    · $100 for a Quarterly membership ($60 with student ID);
    · $250 for a Yearly membership ($150 with student ID);
    · $300 for a Family Yearly membership;
    · $75 for a Remote Yearly membership (live more than 50 miles from the Go Center).
    · There's also a Lifetime membership -- $3000 (discounts for seniors 60 and older).

Personally, I'm excited and proud that, thanks to our members, the Go Center is able to offer such a diverse range of affordable events. If you're in the Seattle area, I hope you attend the classes that are right for you. :salute:
