Resigning might be ok here, but I don't think there's a problem with trying an invasion at the top first.

Without looking at the game, I can say yes, it was too early to resign.
I'm only half-joking. In even games at your level, don't resign. If your opponent killed a 40-stone group, keep playing until they are captured and off the board. Your opponent is perfectly capable of making a mistake larger than yours. This is especially true in tournament games--there are so many enormous point swings at the kyu level.
Of course, there are limits to this--don't play just to win on time, etc. Also, don't wait long to resign in teaching games (that is, against players much stronger than you).
