Dear friends of Aji! Whatever your native tongue, you might
be tempted to show Aji's Quest to young people and to
admirers of pure art in your country.

I gave in to that temptation and produced a first raw
German version: http://www.rwro.de/Go/AjisQuest/AjiGerman.pdf

Here is the same PDF tailored for a fictive language
"Nasserlanx": http://www.rwro.de/Go/AjisQuest/AjiNasserlanx.pdf

Please feel free to use this as a starting aid for translating
Aji's Quest into your native language.

( I am away from keyboard for two days now. So I cannot answer
your questions immediately.)

Cheers,
Rainer

Sorry, no update!

I have a children's event to go to next month, and though it isn't Go-related, I thought I'd design a pamphlet to have on the table for anyone interested...

Only Page 1 done so far. It's meant to be a fold-over. This is the front page, the middle two pages will be the basic rules, and the last page will be web links and info on the AGF and so on. I also will have a paper 9x9 board inside. When the full thing is done, I will probably submit it to Tigersmouth.org for a download. And considering foreign interest, I will try to provide a wordless version. :D Right now various things are preventing me from getting as much drawing done as I'd like...and not just playing Android games. I swear.

Page 2. The next page will have to cover the suicide rule, the ko rule, living and dead shapes, and ending the game. You guys can let me know if I missed or screwed up anything vital.

Or if it's too cheesy, even for kids.

Hi Colette,

this is just aw- and wonderful!

Not cheesy,
but easy!

I will make some copies and insert German text,
so that tomorrow I have something fresh and
funny to make pupils curious about Go.
I have an invitation from a grammar school to
tell them about Go. So that fits in perfectly well!

Thank you for letting me use your work.

Cheers,
Rainer

This is totally awesome! Once it is all done, be great to have it on Tiger's Mouth. We might want to print a bunch for handing out at events too. Thanks for all the great work you are doing with Aji!

This is SO amazing, Inkwolf! I have the feeling this can become bigger than you’d have thought.

I believe this will be THE Next Big Thing™ after HnG, as I wrote elsewhere.

Hi inkwolf,

with my primitive Excel methods I managed to translate your
beautiful and well-organized pamphlets. It was just in time
for my visit in a grammar school.

Since your German is great, you might like to read my report here:
http://www.dgob.de/yabbse/index.php?top ... #msg179777

What I am saying there is:
I translated the pamphlets and printed them as posters so as to
attract my would-be-pupils.
The posters are great (large) and look great (fantastic)!

They are so wonderfully organized: pamphlet #1 saying "Hello!" and
drawing attention via anecdotes new (astronauts) and old (Yao etc.).
Instead of the dry "to be continued" you let the sister tiger say
"Tell them how to play, already".
And then on pamphlet #2 the goal and basics are explained really
careful - what a pleasure!

Cheers,
Rainer

The second page of instructions feels pretty crammed, but I really wanted the basics to fit on those two pages, so, what can you do?

The pages on the back of the paper 9x9 board ended up more elaborate than I planned...

I still have the back page to do, but that will be mostly web links without a lot of illustration or elaboration, so should be easy.

This is USA-centric, of course...the translatable version will be completely blank. People from other English-speaking countries can just cut out the American stuff and replace it with whatever they like.

The empty balloon at the bottom is for local club or specific event or web link info. I'm sure just about anyone can think of something they'd like to add.

Any vital links I should add before putting the final printable version together? (I see I have a typo to fix under the AGF link.)

Okay, cool. I can probably combine that with the GoProblems link.

And the ability to promote Go is insignificant compared to the power of the Fuseki.

Let me come out of hiatus to say wow Inkwolf! This is brilliant! Thank you so much for doing this.

As for links I think the AGF and tigersmouth.org are important but promotego.org seems to have died several years ago. It's not up to date and I have tried to contact the owner several times but got no reponse. It was a good idea but I don't think it ever really got off the ground as a project. Can I suggest that you add links to gogameguru.com and lifein19x19.com instead?

You know lifein19x19 already but have you seen gogameguru? It's probably one of the most popular go sites on the internet by now and it looks really good (kids won't think it's older than they are). They have pages for beginners as well as lots of exciting go news, problems, game explanations and all kinds of other bits and pieces about go. When I emailed them about something recently they said that they're gearing up for big worldwide campaign to promote go later this year. Maybe you could get in touch with them?

I'm sorry to hear that. It was such a brilliant idea and such a useful site. Not only did I register our local club there, but I sometimes was able to find clubs there for people who posted on Yahoo Answers asking about how to find other players.

I suppose I really ought to go check out GoGameGuru and add a link, since they've asked to post Aji there! D

I'll think about L19. I mean, I love this forum, but it seems a pretty mature, serious place most of the time.

Thanks for the input!

Today I test-printed a couple of pages at work, and they looked good (even though they were from the low-res JPGs posted here) but I discovered I had the paper dimensions set wrong, and there's an inch or so of empty paper at the top and bottom of each page. Oh, well, guess I can stretch things out. Maybe Page 2 of the game instructions won't look so crammed.

Okay, changes made. The paper size adjustment left more room, and I added Sensei's Library, since it seem it should be on there, too. Any other suggested changes?

Just two suggestions! Maybe not worth making a new version for.

1. For people who don't know what Hikaru No Go is, bolding or kerning-out the title will make it clear that it's a title of some sort (it's hard to pick up on these things in small caps text - really, "The Interactive Way to Go" could benefit from the same treatment, maybe "Tiger's Mouth" as well)

2. I liked the color scheme on the first version better - I was always told not to use orange on white for writing, because many people have trouble seeing it. That goes double on a page which has so much tiny text and so little negative space already. Of course, you're the graphic designer, so...

PS, I love "OR BUGS!" Most. Adorable. Ever.

Thanks, JTS! That's good to know about orange. It's tough coming up with enough individual colors for all the titles that are readable, but I will definitely make some changes.

One of the few sucky things about Corel Painter, the program I use, is that the text tools are awful. Text is treated all as one big box, and if you want to bold or underline or change colors or fonts of a few words, you have to just leave a blank space and make a completely new text box for the words in the other type style. (Also, whenever you save. close the file, and r-open it, all the text has crept slightly out of place.) Therefore, I probably will not be tweaking the titles. Maybe I can put a highlight color behind them.

The pamphlet is finished!

You can download the high-res version in a zip file here. (Let me know if the link doesn't work, please!)

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8Uo0vL ... sp=sharing

Here's the textless version!

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8Uo0vL ... sp=sharing

Now I can get back to drawing the comic. :D
