Re: Do You Know Go? kid's pamphlet
Thanks! And by the way--this pamphlet may be reproduced and distributed freely, and has a blank spot on the back page for you to add local club or event information, so feel free to make any use of it you like.
I expect it will be added to Tigersmouth.org downloads in time.

Re: Do You Know Go? kid's pamphlet
Time to see if the links page needs an update!
I think I heard that the Kaya server is no longer working (or not accepting new players or something) is that right?
Here's what I have on the links page:
www.tigersmouth.org
playgo.to/index.html
www.usgo.org
www.agfgo.org
GoGameGuru.com
www.goproblems.com
gochild2009.appspot.com
animenewsnetwork.com/video./5403 (Hikaru No Go anime online)
www.lifein19x19.com
senseis.xmp.net
gokgs.com
www.pandanet-igs.com
www.tygembaduk.com
kaya.gs
Anyone know of any links that ought to be removed, or new sites that ought to be added to a kids' Go list?

Re: Do You Know Go? kid's pamphlet
Kaya is dead and has decayed already, and I recommend adding the beautiful and friendly ☯GS instead — OGS, Online Go Server, at http://www.online-go.comInkwolf wrote:[..]

OGS has been a well-visited correspondence Go server for many years, and was merged with the new and modern Go server nova.gs on October 19, 2013 (see http://online-go.com/docs/changelog).
Some facts:
- ☯GS is built on HTML5 which means it doesn’t require JAVA and runs in any contemporary browser,
- it offers both live and correspondence games (and the latter turn into live games when both players are playing at the same time),
- it has many nice features,
- in addition to the other traditional timing methods it offers Fischer timing,
- its user base is growing slowly but steadily (building up on the large OGS user base from times before the merger),
- and the developers anoek and matburt are responsive and dedicated.
And it is free, of course. There are many young folks there, and many beginners (but also quite a few Dan players, up to 5d or 6d, IIRC.
This has become the server of my choice and which I recommend to everybody
Cordial greetings, Tom

Re: Do You Know Go? kid's pamphlet
Thanks, I will have to check it out...both for myself and the pamphlet. (I am still running Os 10.6.8, so can't update to Java 7, which seems to make KGS impossible to access any more.)

You declined my challenge. Maybe you thought I really was a 6d or something.

Every time I read this, I die a little inside.
Let me spell it out for you:
the difference between a live and a correspondence game is that when you get into a complicated semeai/life&death situation, you have about 20 seconds flat to make your best judgement and play a move in a live game, while in a correspondence game you usually have about 20 days.
It's the time controls that matter, not how fast the board updates.

Truly. I played correspondence go for 6 months and it did nothing to improve my real time games.

Re: Do You Know Go? kid's pamphlet
Didn’t you read my PM? It’s about lack of time … and sometimes I can’t play for a few days. Also, I wanted to finish my other games first. And I must admit that tiny offer actually was directed at InkWolf personally, guess I should’ve made that clearAbyssinica wrote:You declined my challenge. But you are right, I did not state it precisely, and in order to keep you among the living for some more time, I’ll try again:
When both players in a correspondence games are present in the game, it “feels” like a live game since 1) the board is updated immediately, 2) both players can “see” each other, 3) there is live chat, etc.
Is this somewhat better?

Uhm, was there any statement about improval in leichtlöslich’s comment that I missed? I didn't allege (at least not heredfunkt wrote:Truly. I played correspondence go for 6 months and it did nothing to improve my real time games.leichtloeslich wrote:[..]

BUT it may depend on how thoroughly one uses the analysis function, and whether one is able to overcome one’s blind spots … <shrug> … I don’t know. But since you mention this, I think that YES, playing through many variations with varying different first moves has improved my play. At least it feels so in the few IRL games I play.
Herzlichen Gruß, Tom

I don't yet, but thanks for the suggestion. When I get the update done, I will see if I can manage a PDF, For now, you ought to be able to open it in any graphics program and add your own text.
