Re: Go Memes
I'm not sure that I see the point.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Re: Go Memes
Actually in Korea I heard that if black does the traditional punishment of two space high pincer on the one space high approach to Kobayashi then white outside attachment gives an ok result.

[a bit of topic, but while we are with kobayashi]
Hi Uberdude,
In the case of a kobayashi opening, is there a big difference between a one space pincer and a two spaces pincer in resonse to a one space high approach ?
I saw example of this in the book "So you want to play go" vol.2 and on badukMovies, and both use a one space pincer in their examples, so I'm currious if there is a reason to play a two spaces pincer which is less server (is it ?).

Re: Go Memes
Hi oca, can you share the link?
Yes the one vs two space pincers are quite different in that white can attach and crosscut against the onespace (9 and a below) which means it can be easier to settle locally*.
If black follows the regular joseki as below and white gets to settle his group I think white is ok.
So probably black plays a variation to make a running fight and use the kobayashi stones:
Black can use the marked stone to fight here and bodge the lower side in sente with the b-c exchange, so this does indeed look troublesome for white.
* If you try something similar against two-space you are too small and make black too strong outside:

Re: Go Memes
Thanks Uberdude, I will check these variations !
Kobayashi is covered on BadukMovies episode 120 but it's not a free one.

This is what I knew so far as the reason not to approach immediatly with

Re: Go Memes
I like ’em. And much more I like the idea of Go memes because when such memes are being proliferated they may make some people curious as to what Go may be … wishful thinking? I just wish I were more imaginative and inventive, but such things don't come easily to me.
Anyway, it’s mostly fun (for some, of course), no big “point” in it, but it can have to power to spread if people like it. Like with playing Go on 9x9, it doesn't really matter if not everybody like’s them.
Funny thing is, now Dawkins’ book that made him famous will always be filed under “The Selfish Meme” in my mind
Greetings, Tom

Re: Go Memes
OK folks, I’m a-gonna steal your memes and spread ’em wide and far, and unlike I usually do, I probably won’t credit each of them with your user names but instead will only link to this thread.
Let’s see when we’ll see them posted by somebody else on the web
[a few minutes later]
Done. All in communities/groups so far: Facebook 1, Facebook 2, Facebook 3, Google+, and finally, in the OGS forum where a meme thread already existed.
Total exposure might be a few thousand people.

Re: Go Memes
I had to look up the meaning of meme in Wikipedia. And I am just as confused by this thread as I was at the start. Can someone please explain to me why these pictures are called memes.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I second that motion.
I wonder if this is a generation gap thing.
PS>
While at it, can somebody explain wearing pants that hang down to your crotch? I see it all the time, and find it even more baffling than memes.

I always assumed it meant that they could not afford to buy their clothes at anywhere but Goodwill.

Re: Go Memes
meme
[ mēm ]
noun
an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.
The oldest example of a meme I can think of is "Where's the beef"
"Calling shotgun" or playing "Slug Bug/Punch Buggy" are other examples of pre-internet memes
It's a phrase that for some reason spreads like wildfire beyond the status of inside joke among your friends.
And more like an inside joke among the community.
If you understand what "going viral" means when referring to a video.
A meme is a phrase or image that has "gone viral"
The internet and Memes
So with the internet phrases catch on more easily and spread more quickly.
I suppose technically the following can be considered memes:
"lol"
"a/s/l"
The following are examples that would definitely be considered memes:
“I put on my robe and wizard hat"
"copypasta"
"Sauce"
"Millhouse is not a meme"
Cat Pictures
This is an example of images as a meme.
Have you ever seen a cat picture?
Or wonder why there are so many of them.
It's not genetic, but a lot of people do it, and a lot of people think it's funny.
No one single cat image is known as the source of funny cat pictures. But cat pictures with words on them itself is so popular that the whole category would be considered a meme.
A New Definition
Images are the most popular version of a meme.
So when image memes exploded in popularity because of social media like facebook and tumblr and etc. people needed something to call them.
The previous term for an image with words on it was an Image Macro.
But Meme caught on and sort of changed the whole definition.
That is why these images with words are called "meme"s
tl;dr (The short version): A meme is an inside joke shared among a community (In this case the internet)
