Newbie Q - why didn't I win on time?????

Post by CnP »

Hi, I'm just a bit puzzled this morning (5am local time). I played a game on KGS ('blitz') and the other player ran out of time. I mean a group of theirs was going to get captured so they sat an waited it out (what a loser). But then they didn't automatically lose. They were still logged in to the game. So how is that possible?

thx

(another id for the censor list).

edit: it was blitz automatch so they couldn't have set up dodgy setting could they?

It happens when a player is lagging severely or is disconnected but the server hasn't registered it. Either way, you're making a bad assumption that the player was intending to run down the clock.

Ok, thanks I've never seen that before. I guess I was jumping to conclusions.

Usually that happens when have network lag (or disconnected). The other player actually has made a move, but the server couldn't tell your client yet. So your client thinks no move has been made and counts down the clock more than it should, sometimes down to zero. When the network lag is over, the server will tell the client about the move, and you'll see the clock of the opponent jump backwards.
