As the title says, here go all announcements related to the Nordic Go Academy (that aren't directly tied with what I do personally as a student there, of course.)

Nordic Go Academy is a go school on KGS for 10 kyu to 5 dan players that operates on a monthly basis. Our students play weekly league matches against each other, all of which get reviewed by our teachers:

  • Antti Törmänen (Tien in KGS) EGF 7d and currently training as insei in Japan,
  • Su Yang (Finnish8d in KGS) EGF 6d,
  • Juri Kuronen (Namii in KGS) EGF 6d, and
  • Lukas Krämer (miao in KGS) EGF 6d.

There is no country restriction: we are the Nordic Go Academy because our 3 founding members were based on Finland, but we have and welcome students from all over the world.

In addition to the league games & reviews, we hold between 8 and 12 lectures a month, arrange a tsumego competition (split in classes A and B) and a tournament (likewise, split in two classes.) There is also specialised coaching and you can participate in a simultaneous game with one of the teachers almost each month.

First announcement: NGA Summer Camp is getting closer. You can read more about it in the post just published in the web here.

If you want a TL;DR version, it's more or less the following list, plus some pictures from last year's camp.

  • Starts 12 July, ends 20 July very close to Helsinki
  • Costs 175€ (before June,) 200€ (before July,) 225€ (in July)
  • Taught by Juri Kuronen (EGF 6d,) Su Yang (EGF 6d) and Lukas Krämer (EGF 6d)
  • Special guest is a Korean 8p, Cho Mikyung. She will give some lectures and play simultaneous games
  • Includes daily lectures, games with reviews, tsumego assignments, simultaneous games
  • Table tennis, sauna, lake, volleyball field...
  • Sightseeing in Helsinki
  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner and loads of coffee, tea and juices during the day.

If you have any more question, feel free to ask! I was there as a participant, so I know what it is like being there already.

Here's the May aftermath post, with the (filtered) results of the tournaments and tsumego competitions and some news related to teachers or students.

Starting from this month NGA participants will have some visual cue of the tournaments and tsumego competitions they have won. To know how all badges look you'll have to join the NGA and win, but today being special here is the badge for June tournament winners:

Image

The calligraphy has been hand-drawn by Antti, I (RB) did the after-processing and general layout. Tsumego badges follow a different idea ;-)

Remember that Nordic Go Academy's Summer camp starts on July 12th! There's still time to join, but the sooner you book your flight, the cheaper it will be!

Also, it's never too early to register for August (there's no formal NGA during July since we have the summer camp)

NGA August starts in a little under two weeks (starts on 9 August) and the inscription deadline is Tuesday 5th August. Weekly games (fully reviewed,) lessons every weekend (usually by Antti or Juri, but after seeing Lukas' teaching live in the NGA summer camp (we'll have a proper recap post soon) I guess he'll start giving lectures also soon.) If you have any questions, please ask :) And if you just want to sign up, you can do it here.

Oh, and our Facebook page just passed 100 fans! Thanks to all ;)

Okay, a little late but we have posted June's NGA program aftermath. Not a lot of new things happened. I added a Edge Bundling plot showing the month match-ups, colour-coded according to winner (based on a D3 example by Mike Bostock for Hierarchical Edge Bundling.)

Here's a (static) image after hovering over my username, to see the more dynamic javascript version, visit the post ;)

After some delays, we have finally compiled the report for the Nordic Go Academy Summer camp, which took place in Espoo, Finland on July. You can read it here.

NB: I'll write my more personal recollection some day, I'm currently somewhat too busy for writing, as my lack of updates to the study journal shows

Here's the October recap. I have avoided posting monthly recap posts, but since there are plans to change the NGA program starting next year, I'd rather post this month's and next's as a farewell to the current setup :D

The dates for the Nordic Go Academy Summer Camp have been decided! Enjoy lovely (i.e. decently warm) Summer Finland while learning from some great go teachers. Also, prepare for the EGC if that is your thing!

Dates: 17th July to 24th July (25th July in the morning is also a viable departure time, perfect to head to Liberec for the EGC)

Post (has a link to last year's Summer Camp roundup.)
