What do you think of that?

Post by Pippen »

Just wanna hear some opinions about a raw dream I have for a while: I imagine a webpage with a 1.000.001x1.000.001 Go board where u can zoom in and zoom out. Every human can play a move. If you play a move it's marked with your name and date. Since such a game would take literally centuries we'd have a nice way to link generations, showing how we are all connected eventually. Like: Wouldn't it be cool if such a board existed to know that Abe Lincoln playing a move there or Nero or...? Like in reality some would play dumb moves, even damaging moves, whiles others wouldn't and who knows what it would mean in the long run. I also think it could be a great idea to promote Go, it could be our modern version of the pyramides that lasted for centuries.

What a crazy, visionary, ambitious, utopian, fantastic, pretentious and grandiose dream you had my friend!

A life of 100 years is like a game of Go, but many will give their single move contribution to the bigger, infinite game of life and human history.

Anyway, I decided that I will play a well placed endgame move: call me when we enter the yose :-D

I'll play the first move on the 314159-271828 point.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I like the idea but I do not know how expensive such a website would be.
Don't we have some developers here? What do they think?

It would cost virtually nothing but time.

Time to deal with malicious attacks, time to decide how to handle 4chan enthusiasts' inevitable project to make a giant dickbutt with stones, or some sort or racial epithet, etc.

I love the idea, though. Reminds me of the wall of equations in Asimov's foundation series.

Really? I mean regarding the hardware. Working with a database storing information about 1000000000000 points on the board and checking if a group of stones is captured sounds like you would need really expensive hardware.

Would the game go forever? If an option to pass was implemented you could simply end the game together with a friend.

You only need store the points that have been played. Checking for capture is quite simple.

I'm thinking up an idea of having a massive, turn-based, team game played on a 25x25 and involving four different teams/colors with different komi's for each depending on move order.
Thinking like a go player during a game of chess is like bringing a knife to a gun-fight. Thinking like a chess player during a game of go feels like getting knifed while you're holding a gun...

While it's certainly an interesting game, having more than 2 sides to the game completely changes its nature. It ceases to be a straightforward game of moves and turns into a game of diplomacy between the sides, since any one side can quickly be demolished by the opponent playing two or more moves in a row against their groups.

That is quite the point. I think it would be fun to see what comes of it. I've seen four player go on a 19x19 and it's just too crammed. I think a 25x25 would allow enough room for some real combat.
